Looks like DC Studios is set to go all in for another villain-based feature as a film teaming up the villains Bane and Deathstroke together is reportedly in the works at the company. While plot details for the project aren't currently available, and neither a director has joined the film yet, this would be another villain-led story following the release of The Penguin and the upcoming Joker: Folie a Deux.
The first news about the film being in development at DC Studios was reported by The Hollywood Reporter on September 27, 2024. It was also revealed that the film is being penned by Captain America: Brave New World's writer Matthew Orton. Deadline later also reported that while the two characters will be appearing in the upcoming film, it's unclear whether they will be the leads as well.
The DC Studios project currently has no release date or actors attached to it.
Who are Bane and Deathstroke in DC comics?
Bane
In DC Comics, Bane was created by Dennis O'Neil, Chuck Dixon, and Graham Nolan and first appeared in Batman: Vengeance of Bane #1 in January 1993. The character in the comics is not only a psychological foil to Batman but also amasses a mass physicality that makes him one of the most dangerous villains of the Dark Knight. Not only that, he is super-intelligent as well.
Bane's main source of power comes from a drug known as Venom which mutates him into a man with great physicality. He got addicted to the drug first when he was spending time in prison and was forced to be a test subject for it.
Bane is also known for the Knightfall story arc where he can be seen torturing Batman psychologically and breaking his back as well - providing the Caped Crusader with one of his most devastating defeats.
Deathstroke
Deathstroke was created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez and first appeared in New Teen Titans #2 in December 1980. Going by the name of Slade Wilson, the character is an elite mercenary in DC comics and has also been referred to as the "world's greatest and deadliest assassin" by many.
Just like Bane, Deathstroke was the product of an experiment as well where he gained enhanced physical and mental abilities after having an experimental super soldier serum being tested on him.
The character became a regular foil of the Teen Titans in the comics, however, over the years he has also had many run-ins with other DC characters like Batman, Green Arrow, and more, and has even gone toe-to-toe with the Justice League.
DC Studios has more villain-led projects under its belt
The upcoming Bane and Deathstroke film won't be the only villain-led project that DC Studios would be producing as they have Joker: Folie a Deux set to release on October 4 as well. Alongside that, they have The Penguin airing on HBO and Max as well which is a spinoff of The Batman and focuses on Colin Farrell's DC supervillain.
Prior to the formation of DC Studios, Warner Bros. was also producing films based on DC villains like The Suicide Squad and the original Joker. Additionally, prior to this, The Raid director Gareth Evans was producing a Deathstroke film too which got canceled.
