Deadpool & Wolverine has been smashing records left and right as it has become Marvel Studios' highest-grossing film since Spider-Man: No Way Home. Released on July 26, 2024, the film sees Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool finally join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as he teams up with Hugh Jackman's Wolverine to save his universe while also fighting Cassandra Nova and the TVA.

While Deadpool & Wolverine saw the massive return of Hugh Jackman as the X-Men character, the film was also filled with many other major cameos and characters. Most notably, the film finally gave Channing Tatum a chance to play Gambit, and he quickly went viral as fans seemed to have loved his performance in the film.

Gambit ends up getting a huge fight scene in Deadpool & Wolverine when the superheroes in the Void team up to take down Nova, but their fates are left ambiguous. However, in a new clip released by Ryan Reynolds on his social media, it looks like Gambit may have just survived the events of the film, and might be set up for a return as well.

In the clip, fans can see Gambit walking in the aftermath of the battle as a sling ring circle opens behind him and he can be seen smirking into the camera. While it's not conclusive of the fact that Gambit may return in the future, it certainly highlights that the character did survive the battle and hopefully may be seen again in the future.

Channing Tatum's cancelled Gambit film explored

Before playing Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, Tatum was set to portray the character in his stand-alone film that was supposed to take place in 20th Century Fox's X-Men film universe. Tatum's involvement with the character goes back to X-Men: Origins - Wolverine where he was set to portray the mutant but was replaced by Taylor Kitsch after he couldn't play the role due to scheduling issues.

However, a solo Gambit film would be in development in 2014 following Tatum's interest in the character, and the film would receive an October 2016 release date with Rupert Wyatt set to direct. However, the film would eventually keep getting delayed with Wyatt dropping out too, and directors like Doug Liman and Gore Verbinski being attached to the project.

While the film was originally set to release in theatres in 2020, it would eventually be canceled by Disney, due to its acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

Channing Tatum hopes for Gambit film to be made following Deadpool & Wolverine

While Gambit might have been initially canceled, Tatum still hopes that Marvel Studios will go along and make a film on the character. In an interview with Variety following Deadpool & Wolverine's release, the actor mentioned:

“I’ve been saying I want it for the last 10 years. It’s in Bob Iger and Kevin Feige’s hands. I pray to God.”

Alongside Gambit, Deadpool & Wolverine also saw the return of Chris Evans as The Human Torch, Jennifer Garner as Elektra, Dafne Keen as Laura Kinney, and Wesley Snipes as Blade. Whether Marvel Studios makes a Gambit film remains to be seen, but Tatum's take on the character has certainly resonated with the fans.
