A Minecraft Movie, based on the titular videogame from 2011, was already raising eyebrows when it was announced, especially because of the subject matter, which sounded very hard to adapt to live-action. However, work around the project began some time back, and soon many big stars were roped in. This included the likes of Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Emma Myers, and Danielle Brooks.
With the first trailer released on September 4, fans seemingly hoped to see something slightly different from what turned up. In fact, the trailer, which looks quite funny and unconventional, has left most fans unimpressed. Many claimed that they would watch the movie anyway but did not shy away from criticizing the live-action adaptation.
Many online platforms, like X, became hotspots of fan discussions after the trailer's release. User @tprstly summed this up with a question:
"Did an AI make this movie?"
Other users had similar things to say about the trailer, with most responses criticizing the approach.
"Looks cringe. I’m not watching that."- One user commented.
"Who was the stylist for Jason Mamoa in A Minecraft Movie? Why does he look like that???"- another user pointed out, critcizing the costume tream.
"This is going to flop harder than Concord"- another fan predicted.
"Ngl, this looks terrible"- another fan added.
A Minecraft Movie is slated to premiere on April 4, 2025. The adventure comedy film has been directed by Jared Hess.
What is A Minecraft Movie about?
A Minecraft Movie is an adventure film based on Microsoft's extremely successful video game. Helmed by Hess with a script from Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer, the movie is set in the titular Minecraft world.
The official synopsis from Warner Bros. reads:
"Four misfits – Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison , Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie and Dawn– find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: the bizarre, blocky wonderland that we know and mine extensively love."
It further continues:
"To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like piglins and zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Jack Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world."
Apart from its appeal because of the subject matter, the movie also stars a huge roster of big stars, including Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge, among others.
More details about the movie are expected to arrive soon. Stay tuned for more updates.
