Ryan Reynolds caused a stir this week, revealing Taylor Swift had sued him for using her cats, Meredith and Olivia, on a Deadpool 2 T-shirt. The star of Deadpool & Wolverine is known for his sense of humor, and he shared this funny story during an interview with SiriusXM's Town Hall in New York on July 19, 2024.
However, he clarified that it was just a joke and Taylor Swift did not sue the Deadpool star. She explained that 47-year-old Ryan showed how the beloved felines appeared on his character Wade Wilson's shirt in the 2018 film, causing funny jokes about supposed legal repercussions.
The origin and the truth behind the jokes about using Taylor Swift's cats in Deadpool 2
During the interview, Ryan Reynolds elaborated further on the interview, saying:
"Yes, I did, I had a T-shirt made. Yes, of [Swift's cats] Meredith and Olivia on Wade's shirt."
He added that it was just a small detail for the film. When asked if he had to get permission from Taylor Swift, Reynolds quipped,
"No, I was sued. I lost everything in that one."
He further added,
"Getting sued by a friend is tough to swallow. Also, she has just a lot of very, very powerful lawyers. I found out later those are just the paralegals. The real lawyers didn't even bother with it."
He talked about the matter but cleaned up his statement to make sure people wouldn't misunderstand his statements. He mentioned he would never have posted those pictures without Taylor Swift's permission.
Those remarks during the interview by Ryan Reynolds were playful. There was no real case of a lawsuit between him and Taylor over the matter. As fans have witnessed, Taylor is good friends with Ryan and his wife, and using the cat pictures in the movie was more of a nod to their close terms than an infringement of privacy.
He made sure his comments would amuse people and manifest light-hearted jokes. He meant that he respected Taylor Swift and her works, so he just had to make some joking statements.
The friendship between Ryan Reynolds and Taylor Swift
The friendship between Reynolds and Swift is known to be strong. In the past, Ryan Reynolds was seen several times at Taylor Swift's events, like concerts, with his wife, Blake Lively. Recently, the couple even took some time out and joined the singer at her concert in Madrid.
They enjoyed the performances and danced through most of the concert. This close personal relationship between Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, and Taylor Swift rules out any possibility of an actual legal suit. Ryan has been reported to make numerous fine remarks about Taylor Swift, where he bluntly called her a genius and said he loved her songs and talents.
From the information Ryan himself has provided, Taylor Swift did not really file a lawsuit against him for using her cats in the movie Deadpool 2.
In other news, Ryan Reynolds's latest movie with Hugh Jackman, Deadpool & Wolverine, hit the screens on July 26, 2024, and is available to watch in theatres.
