The couple's red carpet debut happened at the 2019 Academy Awards, as stated by The Hollywood Reporter on March 13, 2019. Although the outlet reported at the time that the pair had been dating for around a year, the duo opted to maintain silence regarding their relationship.
In an interview with People magazine, dated May 18, 2024, Lulu Wang said that she and Barry Jenkins share feedback about each other's ideas, adding that it feels great to be with someone who understands the industry.
Wang also mentioned that they try to have "fresh eyes" for each other when it comes to everyday work, explaining the same by saying:
"We're not showing every version of the script, we're not showing every cut of the film, and it's so we pick the right moment where we really feel like, 'Okay, I've done everything.
