Netflix has once again invited the wrath of followers after Puck reported that the company used an AI-generated version of Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan's voice to announce accomplishments for their film division at their holiday party this year. Though the event is hardly as formal, this was enough to cause outrage amongst the ardent fans of the director.
Christopher Nolan is renowned for his refusal to work with Netflix and his stance against technologies like AI. This makes the matter more controversial. This event took place under the supervision of Dan Lin, who is now heading the film division of Netflix. The streaming platform has reportedly confirmed the usage of this AI-generated narration.
Fans took to social media platforms like X to vent about this development, with most blaming Netflix and speculating whether Christopher Nolan could sue the company for this.
X user @SepzenoOfficial summed this up, saying:
"Disgusting and disgraceful. They disrespected Nolan."
Many fans had similar things to add.
"If I were him I would sue them for this."- another fan commented.
"Absolutely pathetic. Nolan didn’t want to do their event so they used AI for his voice… that’s just embarrassing."- yet another fan added.
"No chance Nolan isn't going to go after them for this."- another fan said.
"“Nolan launches lawsuit against Netflix” would be the funniest headline to see after this."- another fan added.
"This is crazy when you think about the fact that black mirror airs on netflix and the most recent season had a whole episode about ai using someone’s likeness.- another fan commented, noting the similarity to Netflix's hit dystopian series Black Mirror.
In all likelihood, this will not go to court, but it has generated enough controversy to get noticed by fans and media outlets across the world.
Why is using Christopher Nolan's voice for a Netflix event so controversial?
The primary reason for the controversy surrounding Nolan's voice lies in the fact that the Oscar-winning director had directly refused to work with Netflix, stating that he found their film strategy "pointless."
Since his first interview stating why he wouldn't work with Netflix, the director has never given a green light for future projects, which made using his voice (even though it is an AI-generated version) so controversial amongst his dedicated fanbase.
Moreover, Nolan's ambiguous relationship with AI is also well-known as the director has had his concerns about the future of the industry with the increasing use of AI. As most fans know, Christopher Nolan still prefers the older ways of filmmaking and has often gone out of the way to ensure he does not need to rely on computers or computer-generated elements.
If this controversy does spiral out of control, Dan Lin will be at the center of it as the head of the Film Division of Netflix, which has rapidly been churning out content.
Netflix is reportedly yet to comment on this and Christopher Nolan has not commented on the scenario either. It will most likely not go beyond this. Stay tuned for more updates.
