Legendary actor James Earl Jones passed away on September 9, 2024, at the age of 93. Known for his iconic roles and deep, resonant voice, Jones died at his home in Dutchess County, New York, surrounded by his family.
"Legendary actor James Earl Jones has passed away this morning at his home… surrounded by family. Jones was 93 years old," his representative confirmed to Closer.
James was known for giving voice to one of the most terrifying villains of all time, Darth Vader, in the Star Wars franchise. Jones, who had a menacing voice, ruled over Hollywood for over seven decades, both in theatre and film.
Jones and his wife, Cecilia Hart welcomed their only child, Flynn Earl Jones, born in 1982. James and Cecilia remained married for 34 years until her death from ovarian cancer in 2016.

James Earl Jones first married Cecilia Hart in the year 1982 when he was performing on the show Paris which aired on television in 1979. In 1982, they got married, and in the same year, they were blessed with their only son, Flynn Earl Jones.
While James was a popular Hollywood actor, Flynn has kept away from the Hollywood and media. However, Flynn did accompany his parents to formal occasions including the premiere of the film The Lion King in 1994 which featured Jones as the voice of the character Mufasa.
Flynn has participated in the production of several audiobooks in terms of providing his voice for them some of which include Heartthrob and Revenge. He has done voice-overs for romances and science fiction on audible and in 2019 got a new fame for the narration of Heartthrob.
James, the legend in his acting career, continued working till the end of the sixties acting in both films and theaters. He is, however, most remembered for his voice-over acting prowess in the classic Star Wars series where he featured as Darth Vader, and also in the popular Disney junior animated feature, The Lion King where he lent his voice to the character, Mufasa.
In addition to these roles, he has appeared in Field of Dreams, Coming to America, Dr Strangelove, and The Hunt for Red October, among others.
Jones also holds the record as one of the few performing artists to become an EGOT, winning an Emmy, Grammy, honorary Oscar, and Tony Award during his career. In 2012 he was awarded an honorary Oscar for his contribution to arts in his lifetime.
Aside from his filmmaking, Jones was a Broadway star, starring in The Great White Hope, Fences, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. These stage performances won him several Tony Awards, proving he was one of the greatest actors of his generation.
Jones' immense contributions were honored in 2022 when the Shubert Organization renamed the Cort Theatre as the James Earl Jones Theatre, in recognition of his Broadway debut there in 1958.
Funeral and memorial details have yet to be announced as the family continues to mourn the loss of James Earl Jones.
