Actress Angelina Jolie won the award for Best New Musical for The Outsiders: A New Musical at the 77th Tony Awards held on Sunday, June 16, 2024. Jolie, who produced the musical while Danya Taymor directed it, attended the ceremony at Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater in New York City on June 16, 2024.

The Broadway play is an adaptation of S.E. Hinton's coming-of-age novel, The Outsiders. It follows the 14-year-old protagonist, Ponyboy Curtis, his best friend Johnny Cade, and their Greaser family of "outsiders." It takes a look at their rivalry with their affluent opponents, the Socials, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the 1960s.

When fans learned about Angelina Jolie's win, they took to social media to congratulate and celebrate her, with one fan claiming that it "ended Brad Pitt."

They congratulated the 49-year-old actress, with many calling her a "living legend," and others stated that she deserved all the awards.

"She’s a living legend," one fan tweeted.
"Congrats Angelina," a second fan added.
"Always be on top," another fan wrote.
"She got the OT, arguably the toughest two of the EGOT to get…" one fan wrote.
"What can’t she do omg," another added.
"She deserves all the awards." tweeted another fan.

Fans also said that Angelina Jolie was on her way to achieving EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Awards) status. It refers to those artists who have won all four awards over the course of their careers. Fans stated that the actress already had the Oscar and Tony Awards in the bag and just needed a Grammy and an Emmy Award.

Angelina Jolie credited her daughter, Vivienne, for influencing her to produce The Outsiders

Angelina Jolie had a discussion with Deadline before the Tony Awards and explained how her daughter Vivienne piqued her interest in producing the show. The Maleficient actress said that it was after watching a production of The Outsiders at La Jolla, that she wanted to produce the musical. Vivienne Jolie also contributed notes to the Broadway show with her mother.

She explained that after Vivienne asked her to watch the play together, the actress noticed how the play affected her 15-year-old daughter. Jolie thought it was interesting, as the novel was written by someone close to Vivienne's age.

"So, really, as a mother, as a person, I was watching it, but I was really watching the effect it was having on my young daughter and what she was telling me about herself, and I was learning what about it was important to her and why it connected so deeply to her,” Angelina Jolie said.

S.E. Hinton began writing The Outsiders when she was 15, she worked on it through high school and it was published when she was 18. The novel looked into the themes of poverty, socioeconomic disparity, classicism, and familial bonds.

The book was first adapted for the silver screen by Francis Ford Coppola in 1983, while Jolie's play premiered on Broadway in March 2024. The Outsiders: The New Musical officially opened on Broadway on April 11, 2024, at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. It is currently running on Broadway, and the tickets are available on its official website.

The Outsiders: A New Musical was nominated for 12 Tonys and won four awards. These include Best New Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, and Best Sound Design of a Musical.

Director Danya Taymor called Angelina Jolie one of the "great women who have lifted me up" in her acceptance speech.
