While everyone enjoyed the event's outcomes, it was particularly gratifying for Indians, as Payal Kapadia's All We Imagine As Light secured two historic nominations.
Besides securing a spot among the 'Best Motion Picture - Non-English Language' category nominees, the film also got nominated in the 'Best Director - Motion Picture' category, which made Kapadia the first Indian to be nominated in this category at the esteemed award ceremony.
What is All We Imagine As Light about?
Payal Kapadia's All We Imagine As Light is a story of perseverance, longing, bonding, and love. It is about three women—Prabha, Anu, and Parvaty—who reside in the bustling city of Mumbai, India. While Prabha and Anu are nurses who live together, Parvaty is someone they meet at their place of work.
All three women are going through struggles of their own, however, somehow their lives are intricately intertwined by a sense of belonging, which is difficult to find in a city that harbors dreams and often forgets those who work from the sidelines.
The film's cast comprises Kani Kusruti (Prabha), Divya Prabha (Anu), and Chhaya Kadam (Parvaty). Its supporting cast includes Hridhu Haroon (Shiaz), Azees Nedumangad (Dr. Manoj), Tintumol Joseph (Nurse Shanet), and Anand Sami (the man who is saved from drowning by Prabha).

The first win that shot the film into international popularity was at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where it bagged the Grand Prix (the second most prestigious prize of the festival after the Palme d'Or). Next, the film took home the RTVE-Another Look Award at the 2024 San Sebastián International Film Festival.
All We Imagine As Light also took home the Silver Hugo – Jury Prize at the 2024 Chicago International Film Festival and the Fiction Feature Prize at the 2024 Montclair Film Festival. Furthermore, at the 2024 Asia Pacific Screen Awards, Kapadia's film won the Jury Grand Prize.
