"He looked more like me than I did" - Matt Damon on resemblance between him and Jesse Plemons

Actor Matt Damon addresses internet claims that Jesse Plemons is his celebrity doppelgänger. While discussing his upcoming film The Instigators with Access Hollywood on Monday, July 29, 2024, Damon was questioned if he agreed with the claims. To which the Departed actor said that he "absolutely" did.

Matt elaborated that Plemons was once cast as a younger version of his (Damon's) character in All the Pretty Horses (2000). Remembering the time when Plemons (who was 11 at the time) first came on set, he remarked that "the crew was freaking out," adding:

"Five people came up to me before I met him and said, ‘You’re not gonna believe how much this kid looks like you."

While the Kinds of Kindness actor's part never made the final cut of the movie, the pair did take a picture together. Recalling his shock at meeting Plemons for the first time, the actor remarked:

"I couldn’t believe it. He looked more like me than I did when I was little. Like my little 11-year-old face did not look like it was going (to become me). He looked exactly like me. I was like, 'This is really weird.'"

Matt Damon's The Instigators co-stars Hong Chau and Casey Affleck joined the actor in promoting their film. As Damon discussed his striking resemblance to Jesse Plemon, Casey, who has been his longtime friend, noted that Plemons' "mannerisms" too bear striking similarities to those of Damon.

Agreeing with Affleck, the Bourne Identity star praised Jesse, calling him a "great actor" who is "incredible to watch." He said:

"I’m proud of the comparison."

Casey then asked his co-star whether anyone tried to cast the two lookalike stars as siblings now that Plemons is grown up. Damon said no, theorizing that the large age gap between them might be the reason behind it. To be noted, Matt Damon is 53, while Jesse Plemons is 36. However, the Good Will Hunting actor added that he would love to work with Jesse.

Meanwhile, Jesse Plemons previously addressed people talking about their resemblance. On June 11, while making an appearance at Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Plemons told Jimmy Kimmel that he does "not really" see the facial similarities with Matt Damom, despite many insisting, including his family.

In a separate interview with Access Hollywood in June 2024, he revealed that he was "flattered by the comparison." He quipped:

"Aside from me playing him as a young boy when I was 11 or so, no, I haven't seen him. I wonder how he feels about this... I am definitely flattered by the comparison, but I would be curious to hear his thoughts if he's annoyed."

The Instigators is a heist comedy directed by Doug Liman. It stars Matt Damon and Casey Affleck as two thieves on a run after a botched heist, along with one of their therapists, played by Hong Chau. It is scheduled for a limited theatrical release on August 2, 2024. It will be later released on Apple TV+ on August 9.
