On December 19, 2024, DC Studios released the teaser trailer of Superman featuring David Corenswet as the titular superhero. He is joined by Rachel Brosnahan as his love interest, Lois, and Nicholas Hoult as his archenemy, Lex Luthor. The film is slated to release on July 11, 2025.

The trailer of Superman received 250 million views within 24 hours of its release. It reportedly became the "most viewed and the most talked about trailer in the history of both DC and Warner Bros," according to the film's writer and director James Gunn.

While many praised the new trailer, others expressed their disappointment at Henry Cavill's exit from the role, which was announced in December 2022. The actor's loyal fans slammed the trailer on social media for not featuring their favorite star. One X user made their feelings known by saying they could not imagine anyone else playing the superhero.

"He (Cavill) is The only superman i consider!!"

Other X users shared the same sentiment and showered praise on Henry Cavill for truly embodying the spirit of the superhero.

“Cavil(l) just commands any scene he's in. To me what made his take great was he also had a gentle side to him as Superman. It was darker than the Reeve version for sure, but Henry made it work,” one fan pointed out.
“Cavill didn’t have to act like Superman. He is Superman,” remarked another.
“Look at his posture. Look at his gesture. Feel his confidence. He wasn't even trying,” stated a Cavill fan.

On the other hand, several X users seemed impressed with the trailer and said they were looking forward to watching David Corenswet and James Gunn's interpretation of the beloved character.

“As much as I hate seeing someone other than Henry Cavill as Superman, I have to admit this is going to be a blockbuster,” said one user.
“Reeves was better and I can’t wait to see corenswet he’s gonna be awesome,” commented one user.
“Ohhhh my fu**ing gawd Superman is going to be insane,” wrote another.

Why is Henry Cavill not returning to play Superman?

James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios, previously stated that he wanted to focus on the superhero's younger years and hence decided to cast a new actor in the role. American actor David Corenswet was announced to take on the coveted role in June 2023. However, news of his casting was met with skepticism as many fans of the superhero felt disheartened that Henry Cavill would not be returning to play the Man of Steel.

Cavill was cast in the role in 2011 and went on to star in three films, making his last appearance in 2017 (except for a cameo in 2022's Black Adam). In October 2022, he posted an Instagram video in which he confirmed his return to the iconic role while promising of great "things to come."

"I wanted to make it official that I am back as Superman. The image you see in this post and what you saw in Black Adam are just a very small taste of things to come."

However, Cavill confirmed his exit from the role less than two months later in December 2022 in a lengthy Instagram post. Reportedly, the decision was made to take the popular franchise in a new direction with a younger actor.

Henry Cavill first stepped into the role in the 2013 film, Man of Steel. Directed by Zack Snyder, it served as a reboot of the Superman film series and centered on the character's origin story. David S. Goyer wrote the script from a story by the film's producer, Christopher Nolan.

Man of Steel was the first installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) and was released on June 14, 2013. It was made on a budget of $225–258 million and grossed over $670 million in worldwide box office collections, as reported by Box Office Mojo.

Cavill reprised his role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, released on March 25, 2016. The sequel film was also directed by Zack Snyder from a screenplay written by Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer. It featured Ben Affleck as Batman and marked the first time that Batman and Superman appeared together in a live-action film.

Its budget cost was close to $250–325 million, with the film earning over $874 million at the box office, according to Box Office Mojo.

Cavill's last appearance as the superhero was in the 2017 film, Justice League. Zack Snyder directed the movie, while Chris Terrio and Joss Whedon served as its writers. The film brought back Ben Affleck as Batman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, along with a host of other superhero characters from the DC Comics.

Box Office Mojo reported that the movie earned over $661 million in total box office collections against a budget of $300 million.
