Brandon Sklenar is eager to reprise his role as Atlas in a potential sequel to It Ends With Us. Speaking with Access at a Ralph Lauren show in New York City on Thursday, September 5, the actor discussed the possibility of adapting Colleen Hoover's follow-up novel, It Starts With Us, for the big screen. However, the future of a sequel remains uncertain.
"Your guess is as good as mine at this point. I would love to do it, I really would, I would love to do it," Sklenar said when asked about a sequel.
"I hope we can get it together because I think the fans deserve it, and I'd just love to tell more of Atlas' story and get into his past a little more. Yeah, it would be beautiful if we can do it. I would love to."
It Ends With Us sequel remains uncertain
Adapted from Colleen Hoover’s novel, It Ends With Us has been successful at the box office, making it the highest-grossing movie with the lead actress Blake Lively. However, the prospects of adapting It Starts With Us have been thrown into uncertainty by some internal problems.
These questions were answered directly by the director and the co-star Justin Baldoni, 40, who also portrays the character of Ryle in the film, in an interview with Variety in August. Baldoni’s Wayfarer Studios production company retains the rights to the sequel, but he said that he had not "even begun to think that far ahead."
During an interview with Entertainment Tonight at the New York It Ends With Us movie premiere on August 6, Baldoni weighed in on a sequel, specifically suggesting that Blake Lively should direct it.
"I think that there are better people for that one," Baldoni said during the interview. "I think Blake Lively's ready to direct, that's what I think."
While It Ends With Us captivated audiences, it also generated rumors about on-set tension. A source told PEOPLE in August that discussions about a second movie had not yet taken place, possibly due to unresolved conflicts. The source also stated that there was "much more to this story," hinting at deeper issues among the cast and director.
"The principal cast and Colleen Hoover will have nothing to do with [Baldoni]," the insider claimed, though these reports remain unconfirmed by the involved parties.
Sklenar, meanwhile, addressed some of the negative attention surrounding the film. He acknowledged the increase in public recognition due to his role as Atlas, saying in the Access interview,
"Way more than I was before, yeah, for sure. It's beautiful though. Just happy to be [part of it]."
Brandon Sklenar has been candid about his experiences with the film’s success and the online negativity surrounding it. He previously released a statement addressing the rumored drama between Lively and Baldoni, who were reportedly not seen together during promotional events. His Instagram post, shared on August 20, emphasized that the rumors detracted from the film's core message.
"I put that out, and I was like, ‘We’ll see how this goes.’ It just seems silly to me, you know? It's an important film for so many women and survivors of domestic abuse," Sklenar told Access. "To project anything but that just seems counterintuitive."
The actor remains the only cast member to directly address the alleged tensions within the production. Despite these complications, It Ends With Us continues to draw attention, both for its box office performance and its portrayal of themes related to domestic violence.
