In a July 8 interview with The New Yorker, 60-year-old Oscar winner Nicolas Cage discussed raising three children from three separate women. Cage has been married five times to five different women and has three children.
He explained that each of his children has a different mother, which was not what he had originally anticipated when he fell in love and got married. Cage added:
"Each one has a different mother. It's not what I had originally thought could happen when I fell in love or got married - that I would have three different moms but nonetheless that's what's happened. So every child is different. That's a different kind of level of attention."
Nicolas Cage's eldest son, Weston, 33, is from his previous relationship with Christina Fulton, whom he dated from 1988 to 1990. He shares his second son, Kal-El, 18, with his third wife, Alice Kim, and his daughter, August, 1, with his fifth wife, Riko Shibata.
Nicolas Cage's marriages explored
Nicolas Cage has been married five times to five different women. His first marriage was with Patricia Arquette in 1995, whom he met at a restaurant in 1987. However, the two finalized their divorce in 2001. Cage then bumped into the late Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, at a party in 2000.
Their marriage was short-lived, lasting only three months. They tied the knot in 2002 and filed for divorce three months after the wedding. Their divorce was finalized in May 2004. While talking about his divorce in an interview with Barbara Walters in March 2003, Nicolas said:
"Oftentimes when you have two people who are very strong and their own personalities, and rather intense, sometimes you can have a hard time meshing. We got into this unfortunate pattern of breaking up and getting back together again."
Cage met his third wife, Alice Kim, in 2004, when she was 19 and he was 40. They met at a restaurant in LA, where Kim worked as a waitress. Two months after their first meeting, they married at a private ranch in Northern California so Kim could accompany him to South Africa while he was filming Lord of War.
While talking about his marriage to Kim with The Guardian in 2013, the actor mentioned:
"I married into another culture, and it's interesting because in Korea they call me the Son-in-law."
The two separated and finalized their divorce in 2016.
His marriage to a makeup artist, Erika Koike, was the actor's shortest-lived marriage. The actor married Koike in March 2019 and separated just four days later.
As per court documents obtained by The Blast, Cage claimed that his brief marriage to Erika Koike was marred by intoxication and alleged that he wasn't aware of Koike's criminal history. The divorce was finalized in June 2019.
Nicolas Cage then met Riko Shibata in Shiga, Japan, while filming Prisoners of the Ghostland. The two tied the knot in February 2021. Speaking to GQ in 2022, Nicolas Cage said:
"I am a romantic, and when I'm in love, I want to give that person everything I can. It's my expression of saying, 'I love you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you.' And this is it for me. I mean, this is not happening again. This is it. This is it."
In January 2022, he told the Los Angeles Times that he understands that five marriages are a lot, but he thinks he "got it right this time."
