Lauren London recently opened up about losing rapper Nipsey Hussle five years after his 2019 death. The rapper was fatally shot outside a clothing store he owned in South Los Angeles on March 31, 2019.
During London's interview with Radhi Devlukia on A Really Good Cry podcast on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, the actress explained that she still "felt like a mess." Talking about how she is handling grief, London continued:
"I guess I have to ask my friends how far I’ve come because I still genuinely feel like I have not arrived anywhere."
She added:
"I feel like I’m really heavy a lot, but again, I have to counter that to just, like, the grace of God, because if it was up to me, I would be sliding in here on my stomach, but I also don’t want to take away from the work that I’ve done from then until now. So, I don’t wanna do that, ’cause I’m good at doing that."
For the uninitiated, Ermias Joseph Asghedom a.k.a. Nipsey Hussle was a rapper and activist who rose to fame in the mid-2000s. The rapper dated Lauren London from 2013 until his death in March 2019. They share a son, Kross Ermias Asghedom, born in 2016.
Lauren London credited her children and community for helping her through the pain
During her interview, Lauren London credited her two children (she also shares a son with Lil Wayne) and the "wise people" around her for helping her cope and "push through" the pain. She remarked,
"God just placed people in my life that can kinda just usher me in and teach me and guide me. I always say the prayer of strangers held me up."
Elsewhere in the podcast episode, the actress spoke about teaching her children to deal with grief. She explained that she was a "container" for their emotions, encouraging them to express their feelings. She also pushes them to explore alternative ways to do this, like journaling, writing him a letter, and even playing his music.
Earlier in the interview, Radhi asked Lauren about her relationship with Nipsey. The actress remarked their love was "intentional, pure, and safe." She added that many of the things he told her made more sense after his passing.
"He spoke a lot about... I'm in my cave, in a homebody, that he (was) like, 'People really need to hear from you. You have a lot of truth you should share.'"
London also noted that she "hears" Nipsey's music "differently" after his death.
Earlier this year, Lauren London shared a tribute post dedicated to the rapper on his fifth death anniversary on her Instagram.
In August 2022, when the rapper was awarded the Hollywood Walk of Fame star, the ATL star also spoke at the ceremony. She called him a "visionary," adding that "he lives forever."
