Amy Adams, 50, opened up about the challenges of balancing motherhood and a demanding acting career. Speaking with PEOPLE in an interview published on December 4, 2024, the actress shared how she navigated life after welcoming her daughter, Aviana, now 14, with her husband, artist Darren Le Gallo, 50.

Adams revealed that she struggled to manage her responsibilities during the early years, leading to moments of emotional strain, including "closet crying" to cope. The Nightbitch star, whose latest horror-comedy draws inspiration from motherhood struggles, recounted how the challenges of early parenthood significantly impacted her sense of self and approach to her career.

Amy Adams and Darren Le Gallo welcomed their daughter, Aviana Olea Le Gallo, in Los Angeles on May 15, 2010. Returning to work shortly after giving birth, Adams told PEOPLE that the transition was surreal. While filming The Muppets and promoting The Fighter in 2011, she juggled sleepless nights with a newborn and long working hours.

"I wasn't sleeping because I was up with her at night," Adams told People. "I felt so different... the world didn't see me differently, but I felt it very internally."

As time passed, the cracks in her emotional resilience began to surface. Adams described the toll of pushing through exhaustion without sharing her struggles.

"I wasn't communicating what I really needed… and doing what I call closet crying," she said. "You never want anybody to see you cry, so I would cry in the closet."

Amy Adams on balancing family decisions and drawing inspiration from motherhood for Nightbitch

Amy Adams opened up to PEOPLE and said that by the time Aviana was three or four years old, she and Darren Le Gallo had a pivotal discussion about better communication and family support. "He stepped up a lot too," Adams noted, adding that the couple began making decisions as a family, such as discussing the demands of her film projects. Adams revealed that Aviana has always been involved in these decisions.

"We've been talking about it since she was quite young: 'How do you feel about spending a summer in Boston?' Or, 'How do you feel about coming to England with me when I do the play?'"

The struggles Amy Adams faced in real life provided creative material for her role in Nightbitch. The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024, explores themes of identity loss and isolation in motherhood.

Adams' character, simply named Mother, descends into an animalistic state after being overwhelmed by the demands of childcare and an absent partner. During TIFF, Adams reflected on sharing the premiere with Aviana, who made her red-carpet debut.

"I think what I want her to know about my experience of motherhood is how much she's enriched my life and made me the woman that I am today," Adams shared with People.

Now 14, Aviana has developed a love for music and art. She plays bass guitar and drums and occasionally performs with her school band. Despite this artistic streak, Adams shared humorous anecdotes about Aviana quitting ballet and pointing out continuity errors in movies.

Adams, reflecting on her daughter's sharp eye for detail stated that she is "extremely musical" and "observant" in nature.

Amy Adams continues to captivate audiences with her versatile performances. Following the debut of Nightbi*ch at the Toronto International Film Festival, Adams has been praised for her portrayal of motherhood struggles in the horror-comedy.

Looking ahead, she is set to star in Kings of America, a Netflix miniseries about the Walmart empire, and Disenchanted, the sequel to Disney's Enchanted, remains a highlight in her recent filmography.
