Harrison Ford was inducted as a Disney Legend at Disney's D23 Expo on August 11, 2024. While many fans were thrilled at the actor receiving the honor, others were concerned for him, noting the Indiana Jones star had trouble signing his name on the plaque.
In the clip posted on Good Morning America's official Instagram page, Ford shook hands with the Mickey Mouse mascot. The actor, who is 82 years old, then signed his name and embedded his hand prints onto the plaque. Eagle-eyed fans noticed the actor had difficulty signing his autograph, using his left hand to support his right.
However, the actor seemed to be in good spirits as he accepted his award. On August 11, Disney CEO Bob Iger presented Ford with his award, dubbing him the "definition of a leading man."
“Before he was the captain of the Millennium Falcon or a globetrotting archeologist, Harrison Ford was, like so many, an aspiring actor who came to Hollywood to pursue their dreams. He is the definition of a leading man, who stands alone in a category all his own,” Iger said.
Harrison Ford received a standing ovation as he walked on stage to accept the honor. His tearful speech was met with applause as he thanked Iger for the award and for becoming his dear friend. He also thanked his wife, Calista Flockhart, and his co-stars who were in attendance.
“I love you, too. I love the life you’ve given me. I love the people that I’ve had the opportunity to work with. Nobody does anything in this business for long. We work in collaboration, no matter who we are and what we’re doing,” he added.
The D23 Expo saw actors like Angela Basset, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Miley Cyrus inducted into the Disney Legends roster alongside Harrison Ford. Ford made his film debut nearly six decades ago in 1966.
He gained popularity as Han Solo in the Star Wars series. His other famous role included the archaeologist Indiana Jones in the eponymous movie series which began in 1981.
Harrison Ford will star in the new Captain America movie
Harrison Ford last played Han Solo in 2019's The Rise of Skywalker. Ford has often spoken about his disdain for the character, wanting his character to be killed off in The Force Awakens in 2015. However, the actor reprised his role in the 2019 movie. In a 2019 interview with Vanity Fair, director J.J. Abrams explained how he got Ford to accept the role.
“We had a meeting and talked about what it would be. Harrison, who is one of the great people ever, and incredibly thoughtful about everything that he does, all he ever wants is to understand the utility of the character. 'What is my role?' It was about sitting with him and explaining what our intention was. We talked about it for quite a while, I sent him the pages. He got it, and of course, as you can see, he was wonderful,” he said.
Harrison Ford also bid adieu to another beloved character, donning his archaeologist hat for the last time as Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, released on June 30, 2023. In a June 2023 interview with Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? the actor announced he was retiring as Jones, saying it was "time to grow up."
However, he revealed he had no plans to quit acting. Harrison Ford's fans can see the actor in the upcoming Marvel movie Captain America: Brave New World as the US President Thaddeus Ross, aka Red Hulk.
The film, which will be Anthony Mackie's first as Captain America, is the sequel to the 2021 Marvel series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
