Star Wars actor who voiced Darth Vader, James Earl Jones, passed away on Monday, September 10, at 93.
The Tony Award-winning actor's agent, Barry McPherson, confirmed his death to multiple outlets, stating that he died at his home in Dutchess County in New York surrounded by his family members. Jones had suffered from diabetes for a long time before he passed away.
James Earl Jones has played several memorable parts at the height of his acting career. He also brought The Lion King's Mufasa to life, among many others. Besides leaving an impressive legacy in the acting scene, the actor also left considerable wealth for his family at the time of his passing. James Earl Jones is worth around $40 million as of September 2024, per Celebrity Net Worth.
Exploring James Earl Jones's fortune
James Earl Jones had around $40 million worth of assets when he died. His major role, voicing Darth Vader was only a blip in his fortune. Although voicing Darth Vader in the Star Wars movies is one of James Earl Jones's biggest legacies, he didn't get much of a fortune from it, considering the film's colossal success. The actor recorded all his lines for the villainous Vader in a few hours and got a $7,000 flat feet for it.
He told the American Film Institute all about it in 2009, adding:
"I lucked out to get a job that paid me $7,000 and I thought that was good money and I got to be a voice on a movie. It was great fun to be a part of that."
He also didn't acknowledge that he was the man behind Vader's voice until the third film. That said, his multi-million fortune makes sense as James Earl Jones had been in the acting business for over seven decades.
He had another iconic role in 1994's The Lion King as Mufasa, which he reprised in the CGI version of The Lion King movie in 2019. His powerful speaking voice also brought to life, Santa Claus in Recess and the Giant in Jack and the Beanstalk.
Jones also had multiple projects in front of the camera, with his first major role in the 1970 adaptation of The Great White Hope. He also played Admiral Greer in The Hunt for Red October and Terence Mann in Field of Dreams alongside Kevin Costner. Jones also joined the Coming 2 America cast as King Jaffe Joffer, aka the Ruler of Life and the Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa.
That said, Jones's voice remains his biggest asset, and he's worked as a narrator for numerous projects on TV and the big screen. It includes The Simpsons, Lincoln, Beauty and the Beast, and 3rd Rock from the Sun. He was also in Judge Dredd, Scary Movie 4, and Click as the narrator.
Throughout his career, the actor received multiple honors. He's one of the rare EGOT winners, with three Tony Awards, two Emmys, a Grammy, and an honorary Academy Award.
