How did Teri Garr die? Cause of death explored

Following the unexpected death of musician Liam Payne, the world has suffered another significant loss. Teri Garr, a notable American actress best known for her performance as Inga in Young Frankenstein (1974), died on October 29, 2024.

Teri Garr was suffering from multiple sclerosis for years and died from complications related to this autoimmune condition.

Garr has over 140 films and shows to her credit and is known for her quirky comedic roles. Her untimely departure has left many fans heartbroken and they took to social media platforms to pay their tributes.


What happened to Teri Garr?

As per a statement released by Garr's publicist Heidi Schaeffer, she passed away on October 29, 2024, at the age of 79. She died at The Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, surrounded by friends and family.

Before her death, she was suffering from several health issues and was in a delicate state, with multiple co-morbidities stemming from multiple sclerosis.

She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999. In 2002, she revealed to her followers about the disease for the first time. In her 2006 memoir, Speedbumps: Flooring It Through Hollywood, Teri Garr candidly wrote about her condition and called MS "a sneaky disease" that had the tendency of sneaking up and disappearing completely at random times.

In a 2003 interview, she spoke about her experience with MS and said:

"I was afraid that I wouldn't get work. People hear MS and think, 'Oh, my God, the person has two days to live."

In 2006, she had an aneurysm and spent several days in a coma. In January 2007, she underwent a significant procedure to fix her aneurysm. In 2011, she announced her retirement from acting.

Multiple sclerosis is a disease that affects the immune system, leading to damage to the protective nerve coverings in the brain and spinal cord. It is an incurable condition. This disease has a wide range of symptoms like depression, problems in vision, muscle weakness, and sexual dysfunction, among many more.

  • Secondary progressive MS
  • Progressive relapsing MS

American actress Teri Garr was born December 11, 1944, in Lakewood, Ohio. During her long career in the film industry, she garnered numerous accolades, including a National Board of Review Award and an Academy Award nomination, among many others.

She was a part of multiple movies and TV shows like Young Frankenstein (1974), The Black Stallion (1979), Mom and Dad Save the World (1992), Friends (1994-2004), and more.

Even though she is no longer with us, her work will live on through her followers and well-wishers. She is survived by her daughter, Molly O'Neil, and her grandson Tyryn.
