Renowned veteran actress Caroline Aaron talked about the problem of cancel culture that filmmaker Woody Allen has been facing owing to allegations of sexually assaulting his adopted daughter. In an interview published by The Guardian on August 12, the actress said that Allen’s legacy in America has been wrecked. Aaron, who has been a strong defender of the filmmaker, thinks of the entire propaganda as dangerous.
“They have successfully dismantled his legacy in America. I find it dangerous and sad,” said The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel actress.
Caroline Aaron had worked on several films with the filmmaker. She recalled an interaction with a young female actor who, along with her friends, decided to never play a role in any of Allen’s films. As the allegations had not been proven, Aaron asked the actor not to speak of something with certainty as she could be wrong.
“Since you don’t know [the truth about the allegations], why can’t you say you don’t know? What about collateral damage? Like, perhaps you’re wrong?”, said Caroline Aaron.
The interview was primarily about Sandra Tsing Loh’s recent play Madwomen of the West in which the actress played a role. This play shows a glimpse of the generation gap arising from the polarity between wokeness and justified correction.
While talking about the play, the veteran actress reflected on how the younger generation makes the elders feel condemned. Loh’s new comedy will have matinee performances at Riverside Studios in London till August 24.
Netizens criticize Caroline Aaron for defending Woody Allen
The allegation was raised against the filmmaker back in 1992 when his ex-partner Mia Farrow accused him of sexually molesting their adopted daughter Dylan Farrow. Their daughter was seven back then. Woody Allen denied all allegations that were raised against him. However, Caroline Aaron’s recent defensive attitude faced several criticisms from the netizens.
Many commented that the way she thought younger actors’ decision to not work with Woody Allen was some sort of a pact is not justified. Social media users felt that the actors have the liberty to decide who they want to work with and who they don’t and labeling their collective decision a pact can sound conspiratorial. Some comments even took a political turn.
“The word "pact" makes it sound so conspiratorial. It could just be that a group of actresses were having a discussion about their careers, and came to the conclusion that working with Woody Allen might not be a good thing to do”, a user commented on Reddit.
"I don’t understand the whole handwringing around whether he did it or not, do we not have proof that he married his adopted daughter? Is that not enough? In what world is that normal and not predatory even if you want to make the case to forget everything else?!", wrote another user.
Caroline Aaron has worked with Woody Allen in many films in the late 1990s. She played his sister in Crimes and Misdemeanors and Deconstructing Harry. The actress also worked with him in Husbands and Wives, Bullets over Broadway, and Alice.
