Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie reveals that she stopped singing after an ex criticized her voice. Jolie has returned to the screen with Maria, a biopic about the opera singer Maria Callas directed by Pablo Larrain. Although Jolie sings in the movie, she spoke to The Hollywood Reporter on August 30 and revealed why getting to singing was difficult for her.
"I don't sing. I had somebody in my life who was not kind to me about singing. It was a relationship I was in. And so I just assumed I couldn't really sing. I'd been to theatre school, so it was weird it even had an effect on me. I just kind of adapted to this person's opinion. So it took me getting past a lot of things to start singing."
Angelina did not reveal the said person's name.
"I thought I had a low voice my whole life," said Angelina Jolie
While talking about the process of getting back to singing, Angelina Jolie mentioned that it was her "many months of singing classes" and also Italian classics. Jolie mentioned that Opera singing requires using "your full body as loud as you could."
While speaking to the publication about rediscovering her singing abilities, Angelina Jolie mentioned that while working on the movie she found out that she is a soprano. As per the Kennedy Center, Soprano voices have impressive high notes.
"I thought I had a low voice my whole life. I was explaining (to the singing instructor) that my voice is deeper, and he said, 'No, you're actually a soprano.' And probably something happened. Your voice changes when you go through different things in your life. So that a shock. That was very strange."
The actress has gone through quite a struggle amidst her ongoing divorce from Brad Pitt since 2016. The couple tied the knot in the French Village of Carrens in August 2014, but Jolie filed a divorce after two years in September 2016.
The contentious legal battle for divorce continues as Brad and Jolie argue over custody of their 6 kids and their finances.
Angelina Jolie's new film Maria premiered at the Venice Film Festival on August 29 and received a standing ovation at the Telluride Film Festival on September 2. Directed by Larrain, Maria is part of his trilogy of iconic women, following Jackie (2016) and Spencer (2021). The movie has been acquired by Netflix and will soon be available for streaming.
