Andie MacDowell opened up about experiencing what she called "reverse nepotism," thanks to her movie star daughter Margaret Qualley's popularity. The actress joined Jimmy Fallon on the Thursday, January 23, episode of The Tonight Show and joked about redefining nepotism because of her proximity to her daughter and her son-in-law, Jack Antonoff.
While she gushed about her daughter's success in the movie The Substance, Fallon mentioned what she told him backstage about experiencing "reverse nepotism." Andie MacDowell explained what she meant, saying:
"I am now, you know, what they always accuse the children of. I am now cool because I'm Margaret Qualley's mom and also Jack Antonoff's mother-in-law. So it's a double whammy."
The actress was seemingly referring to the term "nepo babies" but claimed that in her case, it was different because her movie star daughter and musician son-in-law have made her "cool."
The A Sudden Case of Christmas actress further said that she would receive letters in the mailbox from 13-year-olds telling her how they thought she was wonderful, which surprised the actress.
Andie MacDowell shares high praises for her daughter Margaret Qualley
Andie MacDowell shares her 30-year-old daughter, Margaret, with her ex-husband Paul Qualley. They also have an older son and daughter, Justin and Rainey. During the January 23 episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, she was singing praises for her youngest kid, who recently starred in the award-winning movie The Substance. She said:
"She's really crushing it. She's really brave. The movie is fantastic. She takes so many chances. She's so much braver than I could've ever been, she really carved her own road and I'm super, super proud of her."
It wasn't the first time Andie MacDowell shared praises for her youngest daughter or called her brave. In her features for Grazia Magazine in 2022, she talked about how creative and professional Margaret is and how she takes her jobs "very seriously." At the time, Margaret was fresh off receiving multiple award nominations for her leading role in Netflix's drama Maid, which also stars MacDowell.
The model and actress said that she tried to help her daughter feel free to explore, something that she wasn't able to do because of her "very conservative" environment. She added:
"Not that I can take credit for what she is doing because my gosh, I don't know, she is much braver than I ever was. But I know I played a part in that. That braveness, that sense of security with herself and freedom to explore anything without question. She's doing it."
The Ready or Not actress told People in May 2024 about her daughters buying "a lot" of her magazine covers online. She said it made her "feel good" and that it was something that she also does for her kids.
Andie MacDowell has relocated to South Carolina from Los Angeles, something that she shared on The Drew Barrymore Show on January 23, 2025. With her kids growing older and having their own lives, this move was her way to fill the "huge void" in her empty nest. However, se admitted that she's never been happier in a long time.
