"I thought he was joking"— Lady Gaga thought Michael Polansky's proposal was an April Fool's prank

Lady Gaga revealed why she thought businessman Michael Polansky's marriage proposal on April Fool's Day was a joke. During the September 27 episode of The Graham Norton Show, the singer-actress brought up her engagement while discussing her upcoming movie Joker: Folie a Deux. She explained:

"He proposed on April first and I thought he was joking."

She went on to say that her engagement made headlines after she accidentally introduced Polansky as her "fiancé" during a conversation with French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal at the Olympics. Lady Gaga told host Graham Norton that she wanted to keep the engagement a "secret," but her slip of the tongue at the Olympics made it a hot topic.

For the unversed, Lady Gaga performed alongside the Seine River at the French capital during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. French PM Gabriel Attal joined in the stands during one of the games. He shared a video on TikTok where the singer was seen introducing Michael Polanksy, saying:

"This is my fiance, Michael."

While Lady Gaga shared that she wanted to keep her engagement udner wraps, she had too open up about the proposal after the news broke. Vogue's October issue, published on September 5, 2024, revealed how the proposal went. The feature read in part:

"She and Michael Polansky, her companion of nearly five years, got engaged in April after a day of rock climbing."

The singer also discussed with the publication about how she met her fiancé. She said that her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, met Michael Polansky first and later told her, "I think I just met your husband," to which Gaga reportedly replied that she's "not ready meet [her] husband."

It wasn't clear when Gaga's mom met Polansky, but it wasn't until December 2019 that the singer met Polansky at the 40th birthday party of Sean Parker, Napster founder and Facebook president.

The couple sparked engagement rumors as early as April 2024 after Lady Gaga was pictured wearing the same diamond on her left ring finger on several occasions. She flashed the same gargantuan engagement ring during the Venice International Film Festival on September 3, a day before her film Joker: Folie a Deux premiered at the event and received an 11-minute standing ovation.

Elsewhere in her The Graham Norton Show appearance, Gaga discussed playing Harley Quinn, aka Lee, in Joker: Folie a Deux. She said she tried to "root [for] her" in reality and praised the psychological thriller musical. The singer-actress described the upcoming film as funny with drama and that there's dance and music. She said that "it breaks genre in many ways."

Lady Gaga's Joker: Folie a Deux is scheduled to hit US movie theaters on October 4, 2024. The screenplay is penned by Scott Silver. Directed by Todd Phillips, the film follows Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck incarcerated at Arkham State Hospital, where he finds music and true love.
