After a great critical reception and a run to boast about at the box office, Inside Out 2 has now officially become the highest-grossing animated movie of all time, taking over Frozen II, which earned $1.45 billion during its theatrical run in 2019. Just like Frozen II had surpassed its original to set a new box office record, Inside Out has pulled off the same feat.
As of now, Inside Out 2 has officially grossed $601 million at the domestic box office and over $861 million internationally, taking its total tally to a staggering $1.462 billion. We also have to keep in mind that the movie is still not out of theatres, even though the momentum has fallen off, and it will still earn more before it reaches its end.
The Lion King (2019) earned $1.65 billion, but based on technicality, it is not animated. The studio itself classified the movie as live-action, which takes it out of contention from animated movies.
Another record Inside Out 2 has recently set is in ticket sales. It recently surpassed Barbie in ticket sales to become the 13th highest-grossing movie of all time.
How Inside Out 2 managed the massive box office feat
Unlike many other movies we have seen over the past few years, Inside Out 2 hardly employed the marketing tactics of some of the bigger productions. For instance, Barbie went on a months-long marketing spree, which included everything from star appearances to building a life-size Barbie Dreamhouse in Malibu.
For Inside Out 2, the most prominent factor is the success of its predecessor, which both worked well at the box office and was immensely acclaimed. The sequel got some momentum from the original's success and built the rest on word of mouth. The original movie also worked well at the box office, earning $858 million.
The brilliant reviews all around from the critics helped the cause a lot. Moreover, the realistic depiction of emotions in the second movie also made it a social media phenomenon, further increasing its appeal to the masses.
The sequel was also an expensive production, with Pixar spending as much as $200 million in the making.
What is Inside Out 2 all about?
An animated sequel to Inside Out, the coming-of-age drama is directed by Kelsey Mann in his feature directorial debut. The movie picks up from the events of the original one and follows Riley Andersen as she goes through puberty.
The original cast of the first movie returned for the sequel. This included Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black, Diane Lane, and Kyle MacLachlan. They are joined by Maya Hawke, Kensington Tallman, Tony Hale, Liza Lapira, Ayo Edebiri, Lilimar, Grace Lu, Sumayyah Nuriddin-Green, Adèle Exarchopoulos, and Paul Walter Hauser.
The synopsis of the movie reads:
"Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust have been running a successful operation by all accounts. However, when Anxiety shows up, they aren't sure how to feel."
You can still catch the movie in theatres. Stay tuned for more updates.
