Deadpool & Wolverine is the latest offering of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has cemented the X-Men inside the MCU universe. Released on July 22, 2024, the film has already grossed $824 million worldwide, making it the second most successful film of the year so far.

One of the most interesting characters in the movie is that of Laura Kinney, a.k.a., X-23. Played by Dafne Keen, Laura was considered both a clone and a daughter of Wolverine because it was believed that she wasn't born out of natural means. However, Tony Stark revealed that she was the child of Wolverine and Dr. Sarrah Kinney in Marvel Comics.

Dr. Sarrah Kinney was the mother of X-23 and it carried her through the full term. For a very long time, people believed that she was merely a surrogate mother for Logan's clone. However, tests carried out by Tony Stark inferred that she was the actual mother of Laura Kinney. This also proved that Laura wasn't a clone but the actual daughter of Dr. Sarrah Kinney and Logan.

X-23 also has many clones of herself but she destroyed most of them when she escaped the Facility. However, she encountered many of her clones like Gabby, Bellon, and Zelda in the 616 timeline, but only Gabby survived.

Laura Kinney also has another variant in the Marvel Comics called Kirika Yashida. She is the daughter of Logan and Mariko Yashida and was conceived in an alternate timeline.

A big-budget Marvel movie often comes with many surprise cameos and Deadpool & Wolverine is no exception. Months before the release, fans were excited over the guest stars who were rumored to make an appearance in the film. Among them, Wolverine's daughter Laura Kinney was one of the top ones.

The character was last played by Dafne Keen in the Wolverine trilogy finale Logan and the actress was asked by several publications whether she would reprise her role in Deadpool & Wolverine. To the disappointment of fans, she confirmed that she would be watching the movie as a fan and had no part in the filmmaking process.

For instance, in an interview with On Demand Entertainment on May 29, she commented,

"It’s sad. I love Hugh, and creatively, I love Ryan and I love Shawn. I’m really excited to see what they’ve made. I think Shawn’s like one of the best directors out there right now and obviously, Ryan’s a legend, so it would have been amazing to be a part of it but I’ll just go watch it as a fan."

However, the film's final trailer confirmed that she was just bluffing about it and the actress will indeed feature in the film as one of the main characters. This trick was last used by Andrew Garfield who bluffed about him being not involved in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Keen finally came clean to Entertainment Weekly in an interview with the publication on July 19, 2024.

"I had a great time keeping it secret. I had to do a bunch of press for a job that I just finished. I got asked in every interview, and I just got to lie, which was really funny."

She credited Andrew Garfield's trickery during the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home as her inspiration. According to the actress, Garfield "is the master at this [bluffing]."
