Alien: Romulus finally brought back the Alien franchise to the big screens in a huge way on August 16, 2024. The film, directed by Fede Alvarez (Don't Breathe and Evil Dead), focuses on a group of young space colonizers who get aboard the derelict space station known as Romulus. Scavenging the space station in the hopes of a better life, they come across the dangerous Xenomorph which makes them fight for their survival.

While Alien: Romulus brought back the iconic face-huggers and Xenomorphs to the screen once again, it also packed in a third-act surprise that definitely fueled the worst nightmare of fans. The film introduces an alien that's a hybrid between the Xenomorph and Engineers (Offspring), and it's a tall, lanky, and pale-looking monstrosity that Cailee Spaeny's Rain has to battle at the end.

While many fans might have thought that the creature itself was fully created with the use of CGI, director Fede Alvarez proved them otherwise. Taking to his socials, the director posted a video from the set of the film that showcased the Offspring as a practical effect touched up with CGI. Not just that, but it was also portrayed by basketball player Robert Bobroczkyi.

Upon learning this, fans were shocked to see that the Alien: Romulus creature wasn't a fully CGI effect. Many took to X to share their surprise at the revelation.

"IT WASNT CGI???," exclaimed one fan.
"Wild that yall managed to capture the horror of the uncanny valley with a practical effect. Robert was incredible, scariest thing I’ve seen in a movie in years," praised one fan.
"Insane costuming and special effects here. I had no idea much of this was practical until after I saw the movie," said one fan.

While fans were impressed by the effect in Alien: Romulus, others were also a bit creeped out to see that the monstrosity exists in real life too.

"The offspring just causally talking to the director on set is killing me," joked another fan.
"Friendly reminder that this is 100% practical and not CGI which means that whilst unlikely it IS possible to wake up in the middle of the night and have it be standing at the end of your bed," said another fan as well.

What was the offspring in Alien: Romulus?

In Alien: Romulus, it was revealed that Weyland-Yutani was able to salvage the destruction from Nostromo and found the Xenomorph so that they could experiment on it. Through that, they derived the black pathogen seen in Prometheus and aimed to use it on humans so that they could turn the species into the perfect organism.

However, at the end of Alien: Romulus, one of the characters Kay is gravely injured and Andy recommends they use the black pathogen on her to save her. While Rain disagrees with the idea, Kay uses the strain on herself anyway which leads to her giving birth to the creature seen above.

This leads to Rain having to fight it and then spitting it out of the cargo bay into space. You can check out the creature on the big screen right now as Alien: Romulus is currently playing in theatres.
