Wednesday star Jenna Ortega recently talked about the rumor that linked her romantically with Johnny Depp and called it "so insane." In a feature for BuzzFeed's The Puppy Interview, published on August 27, she said that the craziest rumor she's heard about herself is her alleged "serious relationship" with Depp. She added:
"[The craziest rumor about me is] probably that I was in a serious relationship with Johnny Depp, and I wanted everybody to leave us alone. It's so insane to me. I never spoke on that. I never said anything like that."
While the actress slammed publications and articles for spreading the gossip and "making their own quotes," she also said that it was "pretty hilarious."
She recalled an incident where the rumor followed her on set. She mentioned that her co-star from Death of a Unicorne, Richard E. Grant, asked her about her supposed relationship with the Jeanne du Barry actor after the rumor had spread. Her response was to laugh because she "didn't know that person."
Jenna Ortega previously asked people to "stop spreading lies" about her alleged romance rumors with Johnny Depp
The rumors that Jenna Ortega was dating Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp started in 2023 after a gossip account reported that the two were spotted together while filming for Beetlejuice 2. It also alleged that they could be working together in the movie.
However, the Miller's Girl actress took to her Instagram Story to discredit the gossip before it spread further. Per Daily Mail, Jenna Ortega wrote on her IG Story, saying:
"This is so ridiculous I can't even laugh. I have never met or worked with Johnny Depp in my life. Please stop spreading lies and leave us alone."
Johnny Depp also dismissed dating rumors with the young actress last year, including the claims that he might be starring in the second installment of the Beetlejuice movie, opposite Jenna Ortega. According to the same publication, the actor's representative shared a statement that read:
“Mr. Depp has no personal or professional relationship with Ms. Ortega whatsoever."
The statement also clarified that the duo had never met or spoken, and Deep was "not involved in any project with her."
Moreover, Depp's representative added that the actor was "appalled" by the rumors and called them "baseless and malicious," designed to "harm his reputation and career."
As for Jenna Ortega, she's been candid about the social media being "very manipulative." She broke down in tears while talking about the toxicity of social media during her feature in Variety's Actors on Actors, alongside actress Elle Fanning in June last year.
The Scream actress mentioned that she felt nervous about posting anything, in case it would be misinterpreted by others or "twist[ed] in a way" that one wouldn't always expect. She also noted the struggle of balancing being open to her fans without jeopardizing her health and safety, which sometimes made her "feel almost out of control."
