On Tuesday, July 23, Warner Bros. Pitcures released a new trailer for Joker: Folie À Deux. It features Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck on trial for the crimes he had committed in the first film. The trailer also showed Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn, who will be portrayed by Lady Gaga.
Directed by Todd Phillips, who also helmed the first Joker, Folie À Deux will follow Arthur Fleck in Arkham and detail how he first met Harleen Quinzel. In the comics, Harley Quinn and Joker form a romance and become one of Gotham's most feared duos, and according to the trailer, it certainly looks like the film will focus on that.
Arthur Fleck and Harley Quinn come together in Joker: Folie À Deux
The trailer for the second Joker movie begins with Arthur Fleck being taken into court with what is being described as "the trial of the century." Alongside that, we also get confirmation that this movie will be picking up two years after the event of the first film, where Arthur killed comedian Murray Franklin live on television and also caused massive riots in Gotham.
Viewers are also treated to a voiceover by Harvey Dent, as revealed by YouTube's close captioning. Harvey will be appearing in the film; however, as of this article, it is not known who will play the character. He reveals that Gotham is treating Fleck like a martyr while he believes him to be a monster.
Viewers also see Lady Gaga's Harleen Quinzel in action as she comes across Joker for the first time and forms a bond with him in Arkham. The trailer then dives into a montage of scenes showcasing sequences of Harley and Arthur dancing together in a musical setting. At the same time, he faces trial as unrest continues to grow in Gotham.
The final half of the trailer sees Harley and Fleck in a talk show environment, talking about "giving people what they want." From the trailer for Joker: Folie À Deux, it certainly looks like much of the film is set in a surreal environment.
How did Joker and Harley originally meet?
Harley Quinn was first introduced in Batman: The Animated Series. However, her backstory was fleshed out in the sequel series, The New Batman Adventures. In the episode titled Mad Love, fans saw Dr. Harleen Quinzel interviewing Joker in Arkham Asylum as she was intrigued by the criminal mind. However, she falls in love with him and becomes the villain known as Harley Quinn.
It looks like Joker: Folie À Deux will be taking a few liberties with this story as Harleen is seen to be a patient herself at Arkham. With her meeting Arthur there for the first time, the film can perhaps be a loose adaptation of Mad Love.
Alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, the film stars Zazie Beetz, Leigh Gill, Sharon Washington, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Steve Coogan, and more.
Joker: Folie À Deux will hit the theatres on October 4, 2024.
