DC Studios co-president James Gunn took to his social media to announce a project that is currently in development at the company. Gunn revealed that DC Studios is teaming up with Matt Reeves' 6th & Idaho and Swaybox to produce an animated film that tells the origin stories of Robins Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, titled Dynamic Duo.
Through X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, James Gunn said:
"Over the moon excited to announce the newest DC Studios / Warner Bros Pictures Animation greenlit film for theaters, DYNAMIC DUO, the story of Robin… or should I say, Robins, as in Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. "
He continued:
"The first feature film from the visionary Swaybox, a mix of animation, puppetry, and CGI, a script from the wonderfully talented Matt Aldrich, produced with our partners at Matt Reeves’ 6th & Idaho. This is something special."
In a statement to Deadline, producer Matt Reeves also shared his excitement for the upcoming film calling it a "Batman and Robin story for families".
“I have wanted to make a film with Arthur and Swaybox for many years, and for that film to be Dynamic Duo, an incredibly special and unique Batman and Robin story for families, is a dream,” Reeves shared.
The film is written by Matt Aldrick, who is famous for penning Pixar's Coco and Lightyear. Swaybox is a company that utilizes a style of animation known as "Momo Animation," which combines CGI, stop-motion animation, and live-action performance for their films. Fans can expect Dynamic Duo to be animated similarly. The film will be directed by Arthur Mintz.
Currently, there is no release date attached to the DC Studios project.
Who are Dick Grayson and Jason Todd in the comic books?
In the comics, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd are the first and second Robins, respectively. The former first appeared in Detective Comics #38 in April 1940 and was created by Bill Finger, Bob Kane, and Jerry Robinson. As a kid, Grayson witnessed his parents being murdered by a mafia boss. He was then taken under Bruce Wayne's wing, where he teamed up with Batman and became Robin.
However, when Grayson grew up and became Nightwing to showcase his independence, Batman came across Jason Todd who was trying to steal the wheels of his batmobile. He first appeared in Batman #401 in November 1986 and was created by Gerry Conway and Don Newton.
After being caught in the act, Batman took Todd to a reform school, hoping he could change his ways. However, Todd realized that the school was involved in illegal activities and informed Batman about it. This led him to take Todd in, and he became the new Robin.
Dynamic Duo continues Matt Reeves' partnership with DC Studios
The Robins' origin stories Dynamic Duo will continue Matt Reeves' partnership with DC Studios. With Reeves currently leading his own Batman universe under the Elseworlds banner at the company, this would be the fourth production he will develop with DC Studios.
Reeves recently produced Batman: Caped Crusader and The Penguin. He is set to direct The Batman - Part II, which he has also written.
