With The Batman 2 (better known as The Batman - Part II) currently being in development, director Matt Reeves has finally given clues about what fans can expect from the upcoming film. While the film is still two years away from release, Reeves has promised that the upcoming sequel will dive deeper into Gotham's corruption and will still maintain its grounded tone.

Talking to SFX magazine about The Batman 2, Reeves said the film will dig deeper into the seeds laid in the first film. It will be another mystery in Gotham that goes deeper into the city's corruption.

""It's another mystery in The Batman 2 that's going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption, and it goes into places that he couldn't even anticipate in the first one. The seeds of where this goes are all in the first movie, and it expands in a way that will show you aspects of the character you never got to see. Batman is constantly battling these forces. But those forces can't be entirely exorcised. So the next movie delves deeper into that," said Reeves.

Alongside that, the director also confirmed that the sequel will still be focusing on Batman. He wanted to keep him as the central character without too much focus on other side characters like the Riddler or the Joker.

"A lot of times what happens is you establish the Batman in the first movie, and then the next movie is the Riddler's movie or the Joker's movie, and the rogues' gallery takes centre stage. I wanted to find a way to keep Batman as the central arc of the movies," said Reeves.

The Batman 2 will maintain the first film's grounded tone

While many fans were wondering whether The Batman 2 would be delving into the more fantastical aspects of the character by featuring villains like Clayface and Killer Croc, it looks like Reeves won't be doing so. Further in the interview, Reeves spoke about the tone of the upcoming film, whichi will likely maintain the grounded feel of the first film.

"What was important to me was to find a way to take these pop icons, these mythic characters that everybody knows, and translate it so that Gotham feels like a place in our world. It’s meant to feel quite grounded," said Reeves.

Alongside that, he also confirmed that the upcoming The Penguin series will act as a bridge between The Batman and The Batman 2. It also looks like Colin Farrell's supervillain will be a major player in the sequel with his involvement already being confirmed.

When does The Batman 2 start filming?

With The Batman - Part II scheduled to release in theatres on October 2026, Matt Reeves is currently focused on finishing the script for the film. He has confirmed that the film is planned to begin production next year.

"The plan is to shoot next year, and we're finishing up the script now. Colin Farrell will be part of the movie. We've shared the script as we've been going along with DC and the studio, and they're super excited," said Reeves.

The Batman - Part II is scheduled for release in theatres on October 2, 2026. Stay tuned for more updates on the upcoming DC film.
