Mariah Carey looks back at moments with her mother and sister
The entertainment industry is reeling from the sudden news of the deaths of Mariah Carey's mother, and sister, that took place on the same day. The specific details surrounding their passing have not been publicly disclosed yet.
Mariah Carey reflected on her relationships with both her mother and sister in great detail, in her memoir. Her relationship with her family was largely troubled and rocky.
Patricia Carey was a former opera singer and vocal coach of Irish-American descent. She has always shared a talent-rich, albeit emotionally turbulent relationship with her daughter. In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, Mariah wrote candidly about the deep dynamics with her mother.
"Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s," she said.
Alison, Mariah's sister shared a more strained relationship with the pop diva that was marked by long periods of estrangement. Mariah described Alison as "troubled" and "traumatized" in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, on Apple TV+'s series. The complications of their relationship were such that Mariah shared in her memoir that she found it "emotionally and physically safer", to not maintain any kind of contact with her sister, as well as her brother, Morgan.
The lawsuit Alison Carey filed against Mariah, centered around allegations of emotional distress that she went through, caused by Alison's depiction in Mariah’s 2020 memoir. Court records have shown that Alison did not like Mariah describing her as "troubled" and the way she detailed their tumultuous relationship. The memoir also included accusations of Alison putting Mariah in harmful situations during their childhood.
Feeling misrepresented and harmed by these public revelations, Alison sought $1.2 million in damages. She claimed, the memoir painted her in a false light, exacerbating her emotional distress and further estranging her from the family. The legal battle brought their private discord into a very public arena and revealed the depth of their fractured relationship.
Despite complications, Mariah Carey has revealed that she is extremely heartbroken at the dual loss, that she suffered recently.
