It looks like Netflix has set its eyes on another video game to adapt as the company is developing a Minecraft animated series. The streaming service has teamed up with Mojang to develop a new show based on the iconic video game franchise that will aim to tell an original story set with new characters and more.
The Netflix Minecraft animated series was announced at the end of the 15-day celebration of the game's 15th anniversary. In a press release, it was confirmed that the series is being developed by Wildbrain Studios, which is popular for helming projects like Sonic Prime, Ninjago: Dragons Rising, and Carmen Sandiego.
Alongside the Netflix animated series, the popular video game is also receiving a live-action film that is currently in development right now.
Netflix's Minecraft series to tell an original story
The upcoming animated series received a teaser as well. The teaser focused on a Green Creeper walking into the frame and scuttling about before he exploded and left a cloud of dust in his midst. Once the fog is cleared, we are taken to an underground location that is flowing with lava, and this is when the camera pulls back to reveal the Netflix x Minecraft logo. The description for the teaser read as follows:
"This just happened: The best selling game of all time & the biggest streamer in the world are teaming up to bring you a brand NEW Minecraft Netflix animated series!"
Alongside that, a press release was put out as well that hinted that more is to come in the future. In the press release, we also got hints about what the project is going to be like and what fans can expect when it debuts on Netflix in the future.
"We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve joined forces with Netflix to produce an animated series set in our blocky universe. The series will tell an original story with new characters and reflect the world of Minecraft in a new light. It is currently in development by the talented studio WildBrain (creators of Sonic Prime, Ninjago: Dragons Rising, and Carmen Sandiego) and will debut exclusively on Netflix," read the press release.
This would be another video game franchise that Netflix will be developing a project on as the streamer has successfully adapted many other franchises in the past. With shows like Arcane, Castlevania, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and more, Netflix has built up an impressive catalog of animated show adaptations of video games. And with the success of Fallout too, the news couldn't have come at a better time.
A live-action film based on the game is in production too
Alongside Netflix's animated series, a live-action film based on Minecraft is in production as well. The film is being directed by Jared Hess and stars actor Jack Black as the franchise mascot Steve. He is also being joined by Jason Momoa in the film. The live-action adaptation of the game has been in development for a long while now.
The film also comes at a time where games are receiving the live-action treatment as well. With the success of The Last of Us and Uncharted, and with Borderlands on the way as well, studios are developing more live-action projects based on video game franchises as well.
The film releases in theaters on April 4, 2025.
