Social media users were left shocked after Robert Downey Jr. and the makers of Avengers announced the comeback of the actor to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for two films. The actor, best known for playing Iron Man, will now be seen as a supervillain, Doctor Doom, for Avengers: Doomsday, and Avengers: Secret Wars.
The news was announced by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige during the Comic-Con held on July 27, 2024. As per the several clips floating on social media, Robert Downey Jr. stood in a green suit, and a silver mask, with other people around him dressed in brown attire. As the actor took off the mask to reveal himself as the supervillain in the movie, the audience shouted with excitement and shock.
Thereafter, as soon as the videos from the event made their way to social media, it was shared by multiple accounts, as the videos garnered many reactions from the masses. As Marvel Studios themselves shared the video on X, formerly Twitter, one social media user commented and stated how they will never be able to see Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. The comment read:
“I’ll never be able to not see him as Ironman.”
On the other hand, many others also commented and said how the actor has been synonymous with Iron Man.
“So he's going to play 2 people in the same universe?” read one comment.
“Meh. Downey is great but he’s Iron Man. Not Doom.” commented another social media user.
“I have very mixed feelings about RDJ coming back to the MCU as anything other than Iron Man. Why? Marvel is paying a huge paycheck to the most expensive actor the MCU has ever had for a 2nd character? Why?” asked another Iron Man fan
On the other hand, many others were also left ecstatic as a few netizens also called Robert the “savior of MCU.”
“The GOAT is BACK. Saviour of MCU,” wrote one social media user on the post.
“Finally Iron man coming in a new avatar. Eagerly waiting,” said another netizen.

The news about Robert Downey Jr. came as a shock to the masses as the actor is best known for his role as Iron Man, and has already appeared in ten movies of the franchise. From Iron Man to The Iron Man 3, to even the Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Avengers: Endgame, the actor has received a lot of recognition for his role as Iron Man.
Additionally, at the Comic-Con, as the actor took off his mask to announce himself as Doctor Doom, he addressed the audience from the stage, and said “Same mask, new task.” The update about Robert Downey Jr. joining the cast of Avengers promptly made its way to Marvel Studio’s official X account, which also revealed that the movie would be released in May 2026.
Another sequel to the movie, which will also star Downey Jr. is reportedly scheduled for May 2027.
On the other hand, Robert Downey Jr. was last seen as Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Thereafter, he was also seen in Dolittle in 2020, and in Oppenheimer in 2023.
