Divergent star Shailene Woodley stirred controversy online after she reposted Melania Trump's statement following her husband's alleged assassination attempt on July 13, 2024. Donald Trump was speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when a shooter opened fire, leaving one dead and two injured.
On July 14, Melania Trump released an official statement condemning the shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, calling him a "monster who recognized my husband as an inhuman political machine."
“When I watched that violent bullet strike my husband, Donald, I realized my life, and Barron’s life, were on the brink of devastating change. I am grateful to the brave secret service agents and law enforcement officials who risked their own lives to protect my husband,” she added.
Woodley then reposted the statement on her Instagram story, prompting many to wonder whether the actress was a Republican.
Many were shocked at the actress supporting Trump and his family, given her role in Divergent as a symbol against a corrupt government.
"finding out shailene woodley is a trump truther was not on my 2024 bingo card??? wasn’t she literally in a dystopian movie about a corrupt government," one person tweeted.
"Jennifer Lawrence being a Zionist, Shailene Woodley being a MAGA. Do these people not know anything about the characters they play and their significance?" another person added.
"tris from divergent would HATE shailene woodley," someone else commented.
Others were surprised at the actress possibly being a Republican given that she was campaigning for Bernie Sanders in 2016 and 2020.
"Wait HUH? Anti-Dakota Pipeline Shailene Woodley? Pro Bernie Sanders Shailene Woodley? Oceans Ambassador for Green Peace Shailene Woodley? Solar energy advocate Shailene Woodley?" tweeted a fan.
"Let's go back to 2016 when we cared about clean water and Shailene Woodley was advocating for/with Bernie Sanders. Make sure to vote wisely this election," added another person.
"Why is anyone surprised about Shailene being MAGA? Lots of Bernie Sanders Bros pretend to be progressive and vote Trump. We tried to warn y’all, ffs. I’m not sorry if you feel stupid. You should," someone wrote.

A look at Shailene Woodley's activism
Woodley is known for being an activist. The Fault in Our Stars actress was arrested in October 2016 for protesting against the construction of the North Dakota Access Pipeline. Woodley, who live-streamed her arrest on Facebook, was charged with criminal trespassing, and she pleaded guilty to "misdemeanor disorderly conduct" to avoid jail time in 2017.
In 2016 and 2020, she campaigned for Bernie Sanders during the US elections. In a 2019 interview with Vogue, she added that she was inspired to be politically active after meeting fellow actress Susan Sarandon.
"I was like, I have two months free. Do you need any help with anything? And she [Sarandon] said, well, we could really use you on the Bernie campaign. At this point I didn’t know anything about politics. She was like, time to pop your political hymen and get involved," Woodley said.
She is also on the board of Our Revolution, a political organization that started to continue Sanders' work after his 2016 presidential campaign. According to Woodley, Our Revolution is an organization that is committed to helping "the underdog" and boosting candidates that aren't talked about in major media outlets.
"I see Our Revolution as a source for people to learn about the underdog. The candidates who CNN and MSNBC and Fox News aren’t talking about. The candidates who come from places that aren’t s*xy. They come from jobs that aren’t necessarily political," she said in her interview with Vogue.
Along with her political affiliations, Woodley is also an environmental activist. She is a Greenpeace Ocean Ambassador. In 2019, she documented their year-long expedition to explore the water bodies highly susceptible to corporate and government attacks while studying the effects of microplastics on marine life in The Time Magazine.
