Orlando Bloom got candid about the weight loss he had to achieve for his new movie role and how watching it freaked out Katy Perry. The actor spoke to Entertainment Weekly and recalled what it took to play the Irish boxer in The Cut at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival on Friday, September 6. He said:
"We shot in reverse chronological order—I was at my lightest at the beginning of filming and my brain was dead. My body was shutting down. It was a very real experience. I can't compare it to anything."
Meanwhile, in another interview with People magazine on Friday, the Troy actor said that watching the movie "freaked out" her partner, Katy Perry. Orlando Bloom recalled her reaction, saying:
"She watched it and was like, 'I need a stiff drink."
He added that Perry was "really moved" to see him on-screen as "she knew what it took him" to reach that physical state.
For the unversed, Bloom stars as an unnamed boxer in the dark, psychological drama, The Cut. He had to reportedly lose 30 pounds within a week to qualify and get his shot at winning a title fight. As the actor stated, he had to go through an intense physical transformation to play the Irish boxer onscreen.
Orlando Bloom shares that he lost 10 pounds in one night for The Cut
Elsewhere in his interview at the film festival premiere of The Cut, Orlando Bloom revealed that preparing for the role in the movie was more of a mental struggle than a physical one. He didn't sleep much during the shoot because he said it was really hard to rest when his body didn't have much food intake. The actor also shared the "wild" weight loss he had to go through while filming. He added:
"I had about three weeks in the UK to really kind of tighten the weight loss down and that was wild. I dropped like 10 pounds one night after doing [what] the nutritionist told me."
Bloom further mentioned what helped him in the final hours of his prep was the "amazing nutritionist," who worked in the industry and with other actors like Christian Bale. Recalling his "tight, strict regime" while preparing for The Cut, the Lord of the Rings actor explained that he was shocked about what it took to lose about 10 pounds.
He said that he did cardio, took an Epsom salt bath, and consumed two liters of water before going to bed. The next morning, he stood on a scale only to discover that the regime was effective, and he dramatically lost weight.
However, Orlando Bloom quickly added a warning to anyone thinking of doing the same at home. He advised against replicating the process on their own at home, recounting how he had to be carried out of the bath by someone during the process.
As the actor reflected on his filming days for The Cut, he noted that he was "hardly there" during the weigh-in at the end of the movie. He was calorie-depleted and was going into dehydration. He had to lie down in between takes to "conserve his energy."
Orlando Bloom's The Cut doesn't appear to have a distributor or release date yet.
