"People just say anything these days"- Fans disagree with Adam McKay's comments about Wicked being "radical"

Adam McKay, the veteran director behind gems like The Big Short and Vice, has gained quite a bit of traction online for his comments about Wicked, Universal's latest adaptation of the stage musical of the same name based on the 1995 novel.

The director took to his X handle earlier today to comment on how he thinks this is one of the most radical movies to come out in recent years and how it could be banned in the coming years given where the country is headed.

Adam McKay claimed that Wicked's radical depiction and subject matter may as well lead to the movie being banned because America is "more right-wing and propagandized" than ever before.

However, fans on X begged to differ in opinion from the director, with many claiming that they could not see how the movie was radical. Many also expressed that they were confused by this comment.

User @imgoingtoduck summed up the emotion that fans were feeling, saying:

Many other fans had similar reactions to the post.

Adam McKay is no stranger to political films and his claim may not make sense to many, but the concerns could be real in the future.

What did Adam McKay say about Wicked?

Earlier today, Adam McKay took to his X handle to express his opinion on Wicked, saying that the first part of the movie is very radical, and may cause a stir in the dominant community of the country.

He said in his post:

"On a pure storytelling level ‘Wicked Part 1’ is right up there as one of the most radical big studio Hollywood movies ever made. I know ‘Part 2’ swings back to the center a bit but ‘Part 1’ is nakedly about radicalization in the face of careerism, fascism, propaganda."

He further added:

"What’s really striking about ‘Wicked Part 1’ is that it’s coming out NOW when America has never been more right wing and propagandized. And yes, I know the theatrical production and the book are much older so part of the timing is a coincidence but still…"

He also commented on another fan's reply, saying that he would not be surprised to see the film being banned in another three to five years, which is the exact comment that has invited online backlash from the fans.

Wicked did face some criticism online over the casting of Cynthia Erivo and has been a source of discussion for its bold subject matter. However, the movie has still generated enough fanfare and is perhaps on its way to a Best Picture nomination at the upcoming Oscars.

It is still awaiting its streaming release.
