Richard Linklater is all set to return with another very exciting movie, Hit Man, in June 2024, which is reportedly based on the true story of a false killer. Loosely based on the 2001 Texas Monthly magazine article of the same name by Skip Hollandsworth, the film will follow Glen Powell's Gary Johnson, who works as a fake hitman.

The latest trailer for the film, which is months away from its worldwide OTT release, gives a glimpse at the ever-charming Glen Powell in what looks like a tailor-made role for him.

The stylish trailer gives a glimpse at the primary duo of Powell and Adria Arjona while introducing a premise where a college professor and tech guy pose as reliable hitmen to arrest those trying to hire a killer.

However, Hit Man is also set to have a romantic angle, where Powell's character falls for a woman (played by Arjona) trying to hire him to murder her husband, soon setting up a complex trap that is hard to get out of.

Hit Man will premiere on Netflix on June 7, 2024. In addition, it will be the first Richard Linklater movie to be released on OTT rather than in theaters.

The premise of Hit Man is among the most interesting ones in the genre, as indicated in the trailer. A mild-mannered college professor, Gary Johnson, starts working with the police as a fake hitman by giving away those trying to hire him for murders. The trailer gives a glimpse at the many personas that Powell embraces throughout, some even giving a wide glimpse at the actor's comedic prowess.

However, things become complicated for the decoy hitman when a woman, Madison, tries to hire him to murder her husband. As Gary starts getting romantically involved with this mysterious woman, his morality starts to crumble, and he finds himself in a complicated spot.

The official synopsis for the film, as released by Netflix, reads:

"A professor moonlighting as a hit man of sorts for his city police department, descends into dangerous, dubious territory when he finds himself attracted to a woman who enlists his services."

There are plenty of elements in the film that have the potential to stand out. This includes a stellar cast, story, and visual appeal—something that Richard Linklater has mastered over the years. The noir-ish visual stance of the movie, combined with the bright and vibrant graphics throughout the trailer, hints at a very lively action thriller that does not hold back at all.

The film originally premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on September 5, 2023, to great critical reception. As of now, the movie sits at 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on the words of 77 critics. It is expected to retain its high critical acclaim after its Netflix release. It additionally stars Austin Amelio, Retta, Sanjay Rao, Evan Holtzman, Molly Bernard, and Mike Markoff, among others.
