Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have set the internet abuzz after a viral TikTok suggested they are pushing for an Oscar nomination for Lively’s role in the film It Ends With Us. The video, which went viral on August 9, 2024, claimed that Reynolds and Lively are doing everything they can to ensure the film’s success and have allegedly limited director Justin Baldoni’s creative control.
The video containing the claims was re-shared on X by the user @marwithluuv. In the video, a woman presents screenshots from the TikTok comment section and verbally suggests that Ryan Reynolds intended to position It Ends With Us as a potential Oscar contender for Blake Lively—
"Apparently Blake and Ryan Reynolds wanted to use this movie to get like an Oscar nod," the video claims.
Adapted from the Colleen Hoover novel, It Ends with Us is a romance and drama movie starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni as the main characters, Lily Bloom and Ryle Kincaid, respectively. The movie was released on August 9, 2024, in the United States.
TikTok video claims Ryan Reynolds saw It Ends With Us as Blake Lively's Oscar breakthrough
A TikTok clip, gaining popularity on social media, claims that Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have been heavily involved in the film’s production to boost Lively's performance. The video alleges that the couple invested money to gain creative control.
However, Sony, the distributor, supported director Justin Baldoni and threatened to remove their investment and Lively from the project. Author Colleen Hoover, who respects Lively, intervened and convinced Sony to give Lively and Reynolds some creative influence.
"To get B an Oscar. So they invested some capital in the film believing that by doing so they could use that to gain some creative control over the film. So they tried to throw the weight around by Sony had Justin's back. That's when they threatened to take their money & B off the picture. CH, who adores Blake then stepped in and convinced Sony to allow B & R a creative say," Tik Tok video claims.
Moreover, the video further claimed that many scenes were rewritten under Lively and Reynolds's direction.
"They basically rewrote/shot most of the movie under B & R direction. However, they didn't take any directing credits & instead kept it under Justin's name so that if it failed, scapegoat. If it did well then they would take credit as we are already seeing," the video further claimed.
Additionally, the claims emerged following the New York premiere of the movie on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, where Justin Baldoni was notably absent from appearances with Blake Lively. His absence from joint press events and the scarcity of group photos featuring both Lively and Baldoni contributed to the speculation.
None of the credible sources has verified the claims, and no cast members, including Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, nor producers, such as Jamey Heath, have commented on or confirmed the information.
Blake Lively talks about It Ends With Us
On August 9, 2024, at the United Kingdom premiere of It Ends With Us, Blake Lively spoke with the PA news agency, expressing her belief in the significance of the film. She highlighted that the movie captures the full spectrum of the female experience, and as an actor, she noted that opportunities to portray such complex and meaningful roles are rare.
"I feel like this is a film that's important to be made, because as an actor I am not often given the opportunity to tell the story of a woman that really experiences the entire spectrum of the female experience, or human experience," Lively said.
Speaking about her character, Lily, Lively suggested that Lily will make people feel seen and connected to her. Also, the viewers will not think that they are alone like this "messy woman" on earth.
"Seeing the messiness of the human experience I think is a beautiful thing to see, because it makes people feel seen and not alone. I know that's how I felt when I read Lily," Lively added.
The film features an impressive ensemble cast, including Brandon Sklenar, Isabela Ferrer, Jenny Slate, Alex Neustaedter, Hasan Minhaj, and Amy Morton. Distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, with cinematography by Barry Peterson, It Ends With Us has now hit theatres.
