Ryan Reynolds unveiled the new custom popcorn bucket created for Deadpool & Wolverine. On Thursday, May 30, 2024, the actor, who is also producing the film, took to his social media to tease the popcorn bucket and jokingly declare the "War of the Popcorn Buckets."
"Years from now they will look back at 2024 as the year the War of the Popcorn Buckets began. #history #DeadpoolAndWolverine," Reynolds wrote.
The bucket is modeled after the classic yellow Wolverine helmet and has a wide mouth to be filled with popcorn. The words "Designed by Deadpool" are written on one side of the bucket. Reynolds unveiled the bucket in a video showing off its features as Also Sprach Zarathustra from 2001: A Space Odyssey played in the background. In typical Deadpool fashion, at one point in the teaser, liquid butter dripped down the mask.
The move comes after Dune: Part Two's highly popular custom popcorn bucket, which was shaped like the open jaws of a sandworm.
Ryan Reynolds first teased the custom popcorn bucket during the Super Bowl
Ryan Reynolds first teased the custom popcorn bucket during the Super Bowl. On February 12, minutes after the teaser trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine dropped, the actor shared an X post saying:
"Wait till you see the Deadpool popcorn bucket."
Deadpool & Wolverine is the third film in the Deadpool franchise and is intended to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making it the first R-rated movie by the studio. It stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in the lead and is directed by Shawn Levy (of the Night at the Museum franchise).
During CinemaCon 2024 at Las Vegas (April 2024), Marvel Studios boss, Kevin Feige promoted their popcorn bucket to the crowd, saying:
"I don’t want to spoil it, but I will say there are some movies that inadvertently make crude and rude popcorn buckets — and then there are popcorn buckets designed by Deadpool... I look forword to all of you experiencing that for yourselves."
Later, director Shawn Levy jokingly quipped that it was Deadpool and not Ryan Reynolds who was responsible for the intentionally outlandish moments both on and off screen.
There have been similar marketing promotions in the past. Back in 2019, AMC Theatres and Disney teamed up to make a R2-D2 popcorn and drink holder when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was released. Last summer, AMC released a special-edition Barbie Corvette popcorn container.
There has been no news about which cinema chains would run the limited-run popcorn buckets or how much they would cost. Going by the previous promotions, it can be projected between $25 and $50.
Deadpool & Wolverine is set for a July 26 premiere.
