Ryan Reynolds has confirmed that he is working on a new film with Hugh Jackman, but unlike Deadpool & Wolverine, this project will not be connected to the Marvel universe. During a recent interview for a Variety's Awards Circuit Podcast episode, set to be released later this week, Reynolds disclosed his latest creative endeavor. He shared his excitement about the project, saying,
"I'm spending the year writing. I'm writing a movie for myself, Hugh [Jackman] and Shawn [Levy] to do that is not Marvel."
This statement has fans buzzing about what Reynolds has in store. Known for his comedic talent and engaging performances, Reynolds did not provide any additional details. However, he expressed his commitment to devoting the next 12 months to writing, making it clear that this project is a priority.
The upcoming film will reunite Reynolds with frequent collaborator Shawn Levy, who directed him in Free Guy (2021) and The Adam Project (2022). The trio of Ryan Reynolds, Jackman, and Levy has proven to be a winning combination, as seen with Deadpool & Wolverine, which became a massive box office hit.
Their third collaboration promises to offer something unique, marking a break from the Marvel Cinematic Universe's iconic characters and storytelling approach.
With Deadpool & Wolverine earning $636 million domestically, it has solidified its place as one of the most profitable films of all time, even surpassing Warner Bros.' Barbie. The film has also set a record as the highest-grossing R-rated movie, dethroning 2019's Joker.
As for Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe, Deadpool 3 currently ranks as the seventh highest-grossing film globally, recently overtaking Iron Man 3 in box office earnings.
Ryan Reynolds' success drives awards campaign for Deadpool & Wolverine
According to Variety, Disney is actively pushing for Deadpool & Wolverine to receive Golden Globe nominations, particularly in the comedy and box office achievement categories. For the latter, films have to have grossed at least $150 million worldwide and must have generated at least $100 million domestically, or have equivalent streaming numbers.
This campaign is also in sync with possible Oscar attention in the categories of design, sound, and shades, as it happened with Deadpool in 2016. The film earned Golden Globe nominations for Best Picture (musical or comedy) and Best Actor for Reynolds.
Ryan Reynolds has had tremendous success in recent years as not only an acto. He recently won his second consecutive Primetime Emmy for the docuseries Welcome to Wrexham. Meanwhile, Jackman earned an Oscar nomination and won the Golden Globe for his role in Les Misérables.
Levy is a prolific producer and director, and earned four Emmy nominations for Netflix's Stranger Things.
The non-Marvel project will add to Reynolds' repertoire as a writer, which includes Deadpool 2, extras for the Deadpool franchise, and even an episode of Welcome to Wrexham. Additionally, Reynolds has a co-writing credit on Boy Band, an upcoming film that Levy is slated to direct. Whether Boy Band is connected to the movie Ryan Reynolds is currently writing for Jackman and Levy remains unclear.
Outside of their professional collaborations, Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and Levy have formed a strong friendship. During the NFL season of 2023-2024, the trio often spent time together off-set, celebrating birthdays with Reynolds' wife, Blake Lively, and their mutual friend, Taylor Swift.
Levy recently posted photos on Instagram, commemorating a weekend they spent discussing Deadpool & Wolverine with fans.
As Ryan Reynolds continues to work on the script with Jackman and Levy in mind, fans eagerly await more updates. With no official title or plot yet revealed, the film is shaping up to be a highly anticipated project that will showcase Reynolds' and Jackman's talents in a fresh context.
Fans of Deadpool & Wolverine will be closely watching for any developments as Ryan Reynolds and Levy further solidify their partnership and explore new creative horizons beyond the Marvel universe.
