In an article for The New York Times published on July 13, Black Widow actress Scarlett Johansson said that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman would make a good Marvel villain. When Maureen Dowd asked the actress if Sam would make a good villain, Johansson responded:

"I guess he would - maybe with a robotic arm."

Her comments come after her dispute with Altman and OpenAI. The artificial intelligence company's voice, Sky, was eerily similar to the actress's voice, and the company received widespread criticism for it.

"He said he felt my voice would be comforting to people"- Scarlett Johansson on OpenAI using her voice

In May, Scarlett Johansson issued a statement after OpenAI released its voice, "Sky" which was similar to the actress's voice. In her statement, she revealed that CEO Sam Altman approached her in September 2023 to voice the current ChatGPT 4.0 system.

"He told me that he felt that by my voicing the system, I could bridge the gap between tech companies and creatives and help consumers to feel comfortable with the seismic shift concerning humans and AI. He said he felt that my voice would be comforting to people."

However, Johansson declined the offer after much consideration, and after nine months, her friends, family, and the general public pointed out how Sky sounded like the actress.

Scarlett Johansson mentioned she was "shocked, angered and in disbelief" that Sam Altman would use a voice similar to hers. She added:

"Mr Altman even insinuated that the similarity was intentional, tweeting a single word "word" - a reference to the film in which I voiced a chat system, Samantha, who forms an intimate relationship with a human."

She also revealed that the CEO had contacted her agent two days before the ChatGPT 4.0 demo release and had urged Scarlett to reconsider. However, before the two could talk, the voice had already been released, and Johansson hired legal counsel and sent two letters to Altman and OpenAI.

In the letter, Johansson asked for details on the exact process used to create the "Sky" voice, after which OpenAI agreed to take the voice down.

On May 19, Open AI tweeted a blog post, "How the voices for ChatGPT were chosen," and revealed that they would pause the system until they addressed it. The next day, Altman released a statement saying the voice was not Johansson's and was never intended to resemble her. They also apologized to the Black Widow actress for not communicating better.

In her recent interview with The New York Times, Scarlett noted why her voice being used despite her disapproval was "so disturbing." Scarlett Johansson actively "avoided being a part of the conversation" and questioned how she got wrapped up in it.
