An alleged clip from Dove Cameron's audition for Wicked has left the internet divided. Amidst all the buzz surrounding the Wicked movie adaptation, a few X users dug up a clip of Cameron performing How Can I Lose You? from Adam Guettel's 1998 song cycle Myths and Hymns. X user @carlosmoerto posted the clip on October 20 and claimed that this was Cameron's audition for Glinda from Wicked. Cameron sang:
"That's how I always lost you. That's how I'll always lose you."
The clip was sourced from a 2022 tweet by X user @datmatty94, who claimed that the clip was leaked from Dove Cameron's audition. However, the clip that showcased the singer performing while holding a bowl of fruit is originally from the third chapter of a version of Myths and Hymns presented by Master Voices in 2022. However, Cameron revealed to The Wrap in April 2023 that she had auditioned for the movie's role of Glinda.
Some social media users thought that Dove Cameron would have been the perfect choice for Glinda the Good Witch. X user @lalarisst tweeted:
"I’ll say it. she would’ve been the perfect Glinda."
Similar reactions followed as a slew of social media users were enamored by Cameron's performance and thought that she would've been the "best" Glinda.
"would’ve been the best glinda," thought one X user.
"keep it lowkey, but she's really perfect for the role," added a second user.
"sorry but dove would have been perfect for this," thought another social media user.
"She’s the new age Kristine Chenoweth," said yet another user, referencing Chenoweth's Tony-nominated originating performance as Glinda.
Despite conceding that Dove could have played the role, a section of social media users were adamant that the role still belonged to Ariana Grande.
"she was great! so beautiful! but glinda is for sure for ariana," said one user.
"i love dove but ariana def deserved the role," thought another X user.
"she deserves it and would be perfect, but ariana is born to play the glinda," added yet another user.
"It was a very long process": Dove Cameron on her audition for Wicked
During an interview with The Wrap at a North Hollywood Schmigadoon! Season 2 event in April 2023, Dove Cameron spoke about auditioning for the role of Glinda for Jon M. Chu's upcoming Wicked movies. Cameron told the publication that she "definitely went out" for the role. She explained:
"I know that for everybody who did go out for it, it was a very long process. It was one of the longer processes I’ve been a part of."
The role eventually went to the singer Ariana Grande. Cameron had nothing but good things to say about the 7 Rings hitmaker. She said:
"I’m so excited for Ariana. She’s a genuinely dear friend of mine. We met when we were super young. I think she’s gonna kill it. I think the whole cast is phenomenal, head to toe. So, as a fan, I'm really, really excited to see it."
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight in 2019, Dove Cameron called Glinda "the role of a lifetime." The singer revealed that this was a role that she had been dreaming of ever since she was seven years old and acknowledged that she was lucky to even have been considered.
The first movie of Jon M. Chu's two-part Wicked adaptation starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo is all set to hit theaters across the United States on November 22, 2024.
