Paramount Pictures released a trailer for Smile 2 on June 18, 2024. The team had been teasing the film for the past few days through posts on cryptic Instagram and X accounts belonging to a singer named Skye Riley. The newly launched account named Skye Riley Nation gave fans a glimpse of the pop star (played by Naomi Scott) who will appear in the upcoming film.
The trailer of Smile 2 provided insight into what fans can expect from the sequel to the 2022 psychological thriller Smile. As per the trailer, while the storyline for the sequel is entirely different from its predecessor, the same smile curse seems to have made its way into the life of another unsuspecting victim.
The trailer focuses on Naomi Scott, who portrays an extremely popular pop star named Skye Riley, as she performs her song Blood on White Satin. The trailer also provides a glimpse into the terrifying smile curse when Riley's friend (played by Lukas Gage) showcases a chilling smile and smashes a heavy weight into his face.
It becomes apparent that Smile 2 will follow how Skye deals with the curse once it is transferred to her from her friend. The trailer takes a turn when rabid smiling fans follow Scott's character down a hallway.
What is Smile 2 about?
The first Smile film follows an emergency therapist named Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon), who gets impacted by a curse called the smile after witnessing the death of a patient. The film establishes that the entity eventually drives its victim to end their lives after tormenting them with smiling faces for a prolonged period.
Smile 2 sees the return of the entity but in an entirely different setting as this time it is the pop star, Skye Riley, who is inflicted by the curse. The first installment saw the curse transferred to Rose's boyfriend, a police officer named Joel (Kyle Gallner). Kyle Gallner is the only returning character in the film and he will share the screen with Naomi Scott, Lukas Gage, Rosemarie DeWitt, Dylan Gelula, Raul Castillo, and more.
The official synopsis of the movie reads:
"About to embark on a new world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events. Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and the pressures of fame, Skye is forced to face her dark past to regain control of her life before it spirals out of control."
When speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, actor Lukas Gage shed light on filming the title and mentioned that the smile is "so creepy." He then called himself a "wimp" and added:
"You just think, ‘Oh, it’s acting, it’s gonna be fine,’ but that movie is so scary. The whole crew was terrified. That smile itself is just so creepy and then you throw the most gory scenes on top of it, I just, yeah, I have a weak stomach too."
The film is directed by Parker Finn, who is also the writer and director of the first title in the series.
Fans now hope that Smile 2 lives up to their expectations when it releases on October 18, 2024.
