On July 20, Actor Mark Hamill reacted when the "White Dudes for Harris" X account got suspended, after raising about $4 million for Kamala Harris. It was a mass fundraising call for Harris. The organizing rally took place on Monday, July 29, and included speakers like Hollywood actors and labor leaders. It was, however, suspended just sometime after it hit the $4 million donation mark.
This made Hamill post a tweet. In the tweet, Hamill wrote:
"In a little over 3 hours, the @dudes4harris Zoom call triggered $4M in donations for @KamalaHarris. Apparently, someone else was triggered, too. 🤣"
It was, however, not clear who Hamill addressed the tweet to. The suspended account was later reinstated. According to the official X account @dudes4Harris, about 150,000 people joined the event. The tweet further read:
"This is the start of something special and we couldn't be more proud to be in this fight with you."
Another issue that popped up after the temporary suspension of the X account, was that several fake accounts going under the name of "White Dudes for Harris" were formed. Following this many netizens who were supporting the call asked the organizers to take a look into the matter.
Meanwhile, Mark Hamill is one of the several Hollywood celebrities who have been very vocal about his support for Kamala Harris in the upcoming elections.
Several actors like Mark Hamill and Jeff Bridges were present at the Zoom call on Monday to raise funds for Kamala Harris
After Kamala Harris received widespread support from different communities of people including African-Americans, Asians, and Caucasian women, the list now included White men as well. On Monday, a Zoom call meant for fundraising was conducted by the name "White Dudes For Harris."
Several people from the film industry and other influential people were present at the Zoom call which is now further broadcasted on YouTube. Actor Jeff Bridges spoke at the event and said:
"I qualify, man. I’m white, I’m a dude, and I’m for Harris. I’m excited, man!"
Actors like Sean Astin, Mark Hamill, Josh Groban, Josh Gad, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were also present at the event. Fellow Democratic officials like Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz were also seen in the call. The organizers of the call issued a statement, as reported by CNBC, which read:
"Ninety nine days from now we have an opportunity to help Kamala Harris make some history, we also have the opportunity to change some minds, to have some tough but fair conversations, to meet other white dudes where they are and to address some things that... just haven’t been addressed."
While the Zoom call proved to be successful enough that they raised so much money, their X account was soon suspended raising many questions. Not just Mark Hamill, but several others including netizens had asked the reason behind the temporary suspension of the account. Brett Meiselas, the co-founder of MeidasTouch also spoke about the suspension and tweeted:
"X has SUSPENDED the White Dudes for Harris account (@dudes4harris) after it raised more than $4M for Kamala Harris. This is the real election interference!"
Amongst the popular crowd, Mark Hamill could be considered as one of those who had constantly been showing support to Kamala Harris. Recently through a tweet the hashtag of "Hamill Hearts Harris" also became quite popular on the internet.
Not just Harris, Hamill also showed support to Joe Biden. In a tweet that was made on July 21, after Biden withdrew his candidature, Hamill praised the President for working food in his term. He also used the hashtag "#VoteBlue2024ProtectDemocracy" at the end of the tweet.
While Mark Hamill questioned the suspension of the X account, no official answer and reason has been received as of now.
More about the "White Dudes For Harris" call
This was organized by Ross Morales Rocketto, who spoke about the group, before the Monday call. In an interview, as reported by The New York Times, Rocketto said:
"There’s a silent majority of white men who aren’t MAGA Republicans, and we haven’t done anything to try to capture those votes."
The organizers further added that the idea behind the group was inspired by "Win With Black Women", a weekly call primarily organized by influential Black women, who ended up raising about $1.5 million for Harris, shortly after Biden stepped down.
The "White Dudes for Harris" group seemed to be gaining momentum and seemingly had a good turnout.
