Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios President recently made big revelations about Spider-Man 4's future which is rumored to star Zendaya, Tom Holland, and others and expected to release in late 2026. In an interview with CinemaBlend, published on July 21, Feige shared that director Jon Watts will not be helming his director duties for this upcoming Marvel Project.

Kevin explained that the team would now be looking for someone else as a replacement for Jon Watts. He shared:

"...So we'll probably be looking for somebody else, just because he's busy."

With Jon Watts not returning to direct the film, the franchise will likely be scanning other directors under its radar including Sam Raimi, director of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy (2002-2007) and Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024) director duo Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi. Notably, Bilal and Adil lead the directing team for the Ms. Marvel series, which came on Disney+ in 2022.

Why is Jon Watts not returning to direct Spider-Man 4?

As mentioned earlier, Watts would not be returning to the fourth sequel of the Spider-Man franchise as announced by the Marvel Studio President. Feige explained that the director is currently busy with other things and it would be difficult for him to helm the upcoming Marvel superhero film. Kevin Feige explained:

"We love Jon. Jon did three of the best Spider-Man films ever for us. He's got lots of things going on now."

Watt has had a relatively busy schedule this year with his upcoming movie titled Wolfs starring Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Amy Ryan among others, slated to release on September 20, 2024.

Additionally, following the news of Jon Watts stepping away from directing the Fantastic Four movie, many had speculated that the same could happen with the upcoming Spider-Man 4 film. However, nothing was officially said at the time, and instead, Watts had expressed his wish to work with Marvel in the future.

In an interview with Deadline, published in April 2022, the director shared:

“Making three Spider-Man films was an incredible and life-changing experience for me. I’m eternally grateful to have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years. I’m hopeful we’ll work together again and I can’t wait to see the amazing vision for Fantastic Four brought to life.”

Everything you need to know about Spider-Man 4

The highly anticipated Spider-Man 4 is expected to be released in 2026. Fans can expect a more grounded storyline from Marvel Studios and Sony in this installment. After the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home released in December 2021, fans would likely get to see that the entire world has forgotten the identity of Spider-Man as well as any existence of Peter Parker.

While there has been no confirmed date by Sony with Marvel Studios, the film is speculated to come out in 2026. During the press tour for Deadpool and Wolverine, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirmed that he and Sony Pictures chairperson Amy Pascal are expecting a new draft for the 4th movie soon.

The only confirmed cast member is Tom Holland who will reprise his role as Peter Parker. Kingpin earlier feature in Marvel Studios Echo released earlier this year is also expected to be the antagonist in Spider-Man 4. Additionally, as per the rumors, Spider-Man 4 will have events tied with Daredevil: Born Again, the 18-episode Marvel Show slated to release in the first quarter of 2025, where Charlie Cox will reprise his role as Daredevil.

According to speculations events of Daredevil Born Again will set up the street-level superheroes in the Marvel cinematic universe phase 5. More news will be expected on July 25-28, 2024 Hall- H panel at the Sandiego Comi-con.

Previously, Spider-Man Homecoming, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Spider-Man: Far From Home were directed by Jon Watts. While Watt was speculated to direct Fantastic Four for Marvel studios, he stepped down as director. It is now being directed by Matt Shakman.

Feige also talked about Spider-Man 4 to io9 and said:

“Amy and I are working on it. We have writers who are going to be delivering us a draft relatively soon.”

Stay tuned for more news and updates on the same.
