What is The Bikeriders about?
The Bikeriders is a crime drama film directed by Jeff Nichols (known for directing Midnight Special and Mud). It is inspired by the Outlaws Motorcycle Club (also incorporated as the famous American Outlaws Association). It is the oldest outlaw biker club in the world.
The film fictionalized the Outlaws Motorcycle Club, renaming them as Vandals Motorcycle Club, based out of Chicago.
The movie is led by Tom Hardy as the founder of the motorcycle club, Johnny Davis, and Austin Butler as Benny Cross, a prominent member of the club. The film follows how the motorcycle club descends into the world of crime. It is presented through the lens of a photography student named Danny Lyon (Mike Faist), who follows the club and interviews the members and their associates.
The real-life Danny Lyon curated the photo book The Bikeriders which inspired the film. His photographs about the Outlaws Motorcycle Club are regarded as seminal work in the field of documentary photography.
The official synopsis of the film reads:
"THE BIKERIDERS captures a rebellious time in America when the culture and people were changing. After a chance encounter at a local bar, strong-willed Kathy (Jodie Comer) is inextricably drawn to Benny (Austin Butler), the newest member of Midwestern motorcycle club, the Vandals led by the enigmatic Johnny (Tom Hardy)."
It continues:
" Much like the country around it, the club begins to evolve, transforming from a gathering place for local outsiders into a dangerous underworld of violence, forcing Benny to choose between Kathy and his loyalty to the club."
Tom Hardy, Jodie Comer (plays Benny's wife Kathy Cross), Mike Faist, and Austin Butler brought alive the story of the outlaw gang with their remarkable performances.
They were also joined by a talented supporting cast, including Michael Shannon as Zipco, Norman Reedus as Funny Sonny, Boyd Holbrook as Cal, Damon Herriman as Brucie, Beau Knapp as Wahoo, Toby Wallace as The Kid, Karl Glusman as Corky, Emory Cohen as Cockroach, and Happy Anderson as Big Jack, among others.
