Netflix recently dropped the official teaser for The Platform 2, the much-awaited sequel for the Spanish language social science fiction film The Platform. The short glimpse of the upcoming film transports the viewers inside the sadistic and inhumane world of the Vertical Self-Management Center, a tower-styled multilayered prison where inmates live on multiple levels from top to bottom and have to survive on the leftover food from above.
The disturbing and gruesome world of the Vertical Self-Management Center is a satirical commentary on the increasing gap in wealth distribution between the richer section of society and the poorer section of society, represented by the vertical levels of the prison.
The Platform 2 is directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, who also directed the first film. The film will feature an entirely different cast including Milena Smit, Hovik Keuchkerian, Natalia Tena, and Óscar Jaenada. The film is set to release on October 4, 2024.
What is The Platform 2 about?
The Platform 2 is based on a fictional prison, called the Vertical Self-Management Center. It is a tower-like holding facility with an unknown number of floors, each open in the middle for a food table, called 'the platform' to go from up to down to each level. Each day, the inmates are fed only once, when the platform stops at their level for two minutes. If they try to try to steal any food, they will be subjected to fatal temperatures.
This system of food distribution often leads to conflict among the inmates, as the residents on the lower level barely get to eat anything. However, each month the inmates are randomly reassigned to a new level. The residents often lose their sanity in the system and resort to violence, suicide, and even cannibalism.
Themes explored in The Platform series
The Platform was based on a theater script by David Desola and Pedro Rivero, who aimed to critique both socialism and capitalism, deducing that blind reliance on either system leads to exploitation. The film falls into the rare genre of social science fiction which focuses less on science and more on the social structures and systems of a futuristic society. The platform or the moving food table in the film represents the unequal distribution of wealth in the world, where the ones at the top get everything in excess, whereas the ones at the bottom barely get anything. This unfair system forces humans to take desperate measures, leading to increased crime.
The random reassigning of levels every month is a concept similar to the 'veil of ignorance' concept of the American political philosopher John Rawls. The 'veil of ignorance' thought experiment urges people to imagine themselves as an unborn baby who can be born in any existing family, place, and society on this earth, and then make the system of wealth distribution. If society is economically fair, one wouldn't care about which family they are going to be born in.
Similarly, the film series, through the concept of random ressigning of level makes people think that they can be at the bottom of the pit in the next round. So it's better to get everyone on the same level, rather than lusting over getting on top.

The cast of The Platform 2 includes Milena Smit, Hovik Keuchkerian, Tadashi Ito, Bastien Ughetto, Natalia Tena, and Óscar Jaenada. There is no information about their characters as of yet. However, it's safe to assume that they are mostly going to play the residents stuck in the hole.
