Glenn Close’s new movie The Deliverance is a horror and suspense movie
The Deliverance is the latest addition to the canon of films, such as The Exorcist and The Amityville Horror, that depict demonic possession and are reportedly based on real-life incidents. As the film begins, the title card reads,
“The following story is inspired by true events.”
This Lee Daniels movie is based on the true story of Latoya Ammons and her three children, who claimed to be possessed by demons in Gary, Indiana, in the early 2010s, The story revolves around Ebony Jackson, a poor single mother of three children who has moved from Philadelphia into a home tormented by a demon.
Close portrays Ebony's mother who attends church and Cynthia is a social worker assigned to visit the Jackson family after their husband, who is absent, filed for the children’s custody.
The horror movie, which takes place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 2011, begins with Andre, a young child who feels most at ease with his imaginary friend, has recently completed a detailed mural that covers one wall of the room he shares with his siblings. Later scenes show the growing hostilities among the family. Alberta, who recently converted to Christianity, condemns the way that Ebony, a former alcoholic, raises the children.
The movie then continues with Alberta receiving weekly chemotherapy treatments to treat her cancer and Andre seeks companionship in solitude. Then as the movie progresses, weird footsteps, creaking doors, and a dead crow all start to appear as proof of a ghostly presence.
On the other hand, in an interview with the People Magazine, published on August 23, Close stated that she didn't take her job as Alberta lightly. She said,
“When [Daniels] told me that there are white women like this in every Black community, I was intrigued and I wanted to do her justice. And so the journey began.”
Nevertheless, while fan reaction to the film was mixed, many took to social media to talk about Glenn Close's portrayal of Alberta. This happened after one particular scene of Ebony went viral for the dialogue that fans thought was hilarious. They took to Instagram to say the same.
Some joked that Close deserves an Oscar and an Emmy for her performance. Meanwhile, others jokingly claimed that she must have had her rent due, implying that Close took on the role for primarily monetary reasons and that she would not have worked in the movie otherwise.
Critics appeared to have a negative opinion of the thriller, giving Glenn Close's The Deliverance a 33% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, Close has not commented publicly on the criticism of her role or the movie.
