Jason Momoa, renowned for his role in Warner Bros and DC's Aquaman films, has officially been cast as Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, as confirmed by Deadline on December 30. The actor, who has long been vocal about his desire to portray the alien antihero, took to Instagram to share his excitement, captioning a post with the phrase, "They called."

Momoa's connection to Lobo dates back years, even before James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios. In a past interview, the actor shared his passion for the character, stating,

"I collect comics, and I don't do so much anymore, but [Lobo] was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play [him], because I'm like, 'Hello? It's the perfect role.'"

Jason Momoa's Instagram post this week included a screenshot of these comments, further solidifying his enthusiasm for the part.

Lobo, an alien bounty hunter from the planet Czarnia, is known for his irreverent personality, immense strength, and regenerative abilities. Created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, Lobo first appeared in Omega Men #3 in June 1983. The character's chaotic and destructive tendencies have made him a fan favorite, and Momoa's rugged charisma seems a natural fit for the role.

Jason Momoa transitions from Aquaman to Lobo in DC Studios' strategic shift

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, directed by Craig Gillespie and scripted by Ana Nogueira, is based on Tom King's 2022 comic series illustrated by Bilquis Evely. The film, which begins production on January 13, will star House of the Dragon's Milly Alcock as Supergirl and Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hill. Eve Ridley has also joined the cast as Ruthye Mary Knolle.

James Gunn and Peter Safran will produce the film, with DC EVP Chantal Nong serving as the executive producer. The movie is slated for a June 26, 2026 release.

Jason Momoa's casting as Lobo is significant, marking the first instance of a major actor from the previous DC regime transitioning to a new role under Gunn and Safran's leadership. Momoa previously portrayed Aquaman in multiple films, beginning with a cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and culminating with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023).

While the first Aquaman film was a box office success, grossing over $1 billion worldwide, its sequel underperformed, earning $439 million.

This transition signifies a strategic shift for DC Studios, allowing fan-favorite actors to remain part of the franchise while exploring fresh storylines. Gunn and Safran's decision reflects their commitment to maintaining continuity and catering to audience preferences.

Over the years, various attempts to bring Lobo to the big screen have faltered. Directors such as Guy Ritchie and Brad Peyton, as well as actor Dwayne Johnson, were previously linked to the project. In 2018, Warner Bros explored a Lobo film with Michael Bay, but the concept never materialized.

The character did, however, make a brief appearance on the small screen, portrayed by Emmett J. Scanlan in SyFy's Krypton.

With Jason Momoa now officially attached, Lobo's cinematic debut in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow promises to finally bring the character to life in a way that fans have eagerly anticipated.

Beyond his role as Lobo, Momoa has a packed schedule. He will star in Warner Bros' A Minecraft Movie (April 4, 2025) and the live-action/animated Animal Friends. Additionally, he will appear in Fast X: Part 2, the Apple TV+ miniseries Chief of War, and Amazon MGM's The Wrecking Crew alongside Dave Bautista.

Jason Momoa's Instagram post, captioned "They called," has already generated significant excitement among fans, solidifying his position as a beloved figure in the DC Universe.
