Tim Burton recently hinted at a potential reunion with Johnny Depp for a future project. During a Q&A session at the Marrakech International Film Festival on Saturday, November 30, 2024, Burton shared his openness to working with the actor again. When asked about the possibility of teaming up with Depp, Burton responded:
"Well, I'm sure there will be."
However, he clarified that casting decisions are always driven by the requirements of the project.
"I never feel like, 'Oh, I'm going to use this and that actor.' It usually has to be based on the project I'm working on. That's what film is all about. It's collaboration and bouncing ideas off the people around you," he added.
To date, Burton and Depp have worked on nine films together, including Edward Scissorhands, Alice in Wonderland, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, among others.
Tim Burton reflects on past collaborations
The two artists came together for the first time in 1990 to collaborate on the project Edward Scissorhands which has become a defining film in both their careers. Over the next two decades, the duo collaborated on a series of acclaimed movies, including Ed Wood (1994), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Corpse Bride (2005), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), and Alice in Wonderland (2010).
Their last work together was over a decade ago for Dark Shadows in 2012, and their creative partnership has left a lasting mark on Hollywood.
While Tim Burton is open to working with Depp again, he dismissed the idea of a sequel to Edward Scissorhands. Speaking at the festival, he explained why some films are better left as standalone works.
"There are certain films I don't want to make a sequel to," he said. "I didn't want to make a sequel to that because it felt like a one-off thing. I didn't want to have a sequel for The Nightmare Before Christmas because it also felt like a one-off thing. Certain things are best left on their own, and that, for me, is one of them."

The actor revealed that other big names, such as Tom Hanks, Michael Jackson, and Tom Cruise, were interested in the role.
