Fans are already excited about the possibility of Joker 3 as the release date of Joker: Folie à Deux closes by. The second part of the 2019 film Joker is one of director Todd Phillips' most ambitious projects as it retells the story of the fabled Batman villain and adds Harley Quinn to the mix. The musical setting makes it the first major superhero movie musical.
In a candid conversation with Variety, director Todd Phillips was asked about the possibility of Joker 3. Phillips was direct when he answered that Joker: Folie à Deux will be the final project in the film series. Todd Phillips said:
"It was fun to play in this sort of sandbox for two movies, but I think we’ve said what we wanted to say in this world."
The director provided a hint that Joker 3 is not in his plans as he feels that he has done all that he could to do justice to Arthur Fleck's story. This version of Joker, created by Todd Phillips and portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is very different from the "clown prince of crime" from the comic books. Joker: Folie à Deux seems to be the final chapter in the unique world created by Todd Phillips.
Although Joker 3 may never happen, Todd Phillips is open to working with Joaquin Phoenix on a comedy movie
Director Todd Phillips shot down any possibilities of a Joker 3 in his latest exclusive interview with Variety. However, the director was all praises about Joaquin Phoenix who has reprised his role as Arthur Fleck/Joker in Joker: Folie à Deux.
As per the interview, Phillips and Phoenix had initially envisioned the upcoming Joker movie as a Broadway musical. The movie itself also incorporates theater and musicals akin to a Broadway show, making it one of Phillips' most ambitious projects.
However, the director is best known for his comedy projects, which shot him into the mainstream. Todd Phillips has directed some of the most popular comedy movies of contemporary times such as Borat, Due Date, and The Hangover trilogy. When in conversation with Variety, Phillips talked about how he would like to work with Joaquin Phoenix but return to his old arena. Phillips said:
"I’d love to keep working with Joaquin but on a comedy, because he can be so loose and funny.”
He continued the conversation by saying:
“And I think people really want comedies right now."
The tagline of Joker 2 reads, "What the world needs now is love." The director continued by saying that the world can also do with a "good laugh" with increasingly dire news making the world gloomier each day.
Stay tuned for the upcoming sequel of Joker titled Joker: Folie à Deux, scheduled to premiere across theaters on October 4, 2024. The movie introduces Joker's famous counterpart, Harley Quinn, portrayed by Lady Gaga.
